A few li outside Pingnan, a hunting party was forming at a minor notable's home. Inside the gates, horses were being prepared, gear fastened, and checks made. Guards reclined with the chasers, enjoying the calm, and a few guides sat on light bags by the gate, keeping to the shade and ready to leave at any time.

A few eldermen, retired or fled officials and the odd minor officer chatted in groups of their own as they, too became anxious to depart. Quick wit and friendly banter was passed around perhaps a dozen of these folks. It was at once no small gathering of hunters, but no grand party either: this was an effort at both restraint and excess as the organizer flaunted both their efforts to accommodate a relatively large number of principles and willfully free-spirited undertaking.

In short, it was a less than humble testament to the connections of the lady still reclining inside the lodge itself, as Zhen Ya took her time preparing her things. Still, the morning was fast passing, and these things could not be put off forever.

Zhang Liang was greeted warmly by one of the attendants at the gates and saluted more properly by a stocky mustachioed principal. "We are gratified by your attendance, sir, and welcome your group. I am Bi Yin, one of My Lady's companions, and beg you wait a moment while Those Two come to greet you."

Zhang Liang did not suffer the attentions of the minors around him for long, as "those two" bustled out shortly, a dark-skinned and well-groomed man of thickly curled hair and modestly groomed woman some distance behind. "General!" exclaimed the man on his way, making faint gestures of respect. "Pardon our neglect! We should have been ready to meet you!" After arriving, the man composed himself. "I am Kang Tugu, of the letter. And this," he noted with a slight wave, "is My Lady Ya. It was her wish to meet you, and had me write that letter on her behalf."

Zhen Ya drew up rather more measuredly, apparently conscious of her dignity, and saluted Liang in a rather masculine way. Hunting bow slung across her back, swathed in fine layers of silk and cloth, she clearly made the effort to strike an active figure. "Sir Zhang," she finally greeted him in steady tones, "and his worthy attendant. I am very pleased to greet you. I trust your presence confirms you will join our little outing?"

"I am no general, just a simple nobleman who through fate was granted the wisdom of the one who helped found the Zhou," replied Zhang Liang replied with a hint of embarrassment, as he clasped his hands together and greeted the pair. "I am now but a lowly aide to Zhang Ranzhen who has seized control of the city of Yangdi. It is my fervent wish to see peace and stability restored to Hann. For now, it seems that Lord Zhang is the most likely to be able to do so."

"Perhaps, perhaps not," replied the elderly gentleman with a frown. "I am unsure if my weak constitution can stand the rigors of a hunt. You will have to grant me some dispensations. I am no longer a young man . . . and my body has been racked by numerous ailments as of late."

Tugu grew darker with mild embarrassment himself, but nodded pleasantly. "Of course. I only wanted to show my respect for your reputation as a matter of course." The man excused himself to chat with the other participants in their final preparations, detecting he might only hinder things by continuing to draw attention to their guest.

The lady herself continued to give Liang and his aide Huai Leng her attention, however. "I am simply content that you repaid our call. Still, it is my wish to acquaint myself with all talents, so we would be more than willing to accommodate you. Perhaps your men would like to join my personal group in some easier terrain, so we might bring your carriage. I'm not so proud to disdain hares," she finished with a teasing note. Obviously, this wasn't the environment to hunt tigers!

"That would be fine then," replied Zifang, nodding his head. "It's been some time since I last bulled the string of a bow and fired an arrow . . . Hopefully I can still manage."

Yangdi

One clear day in June, before the sun rose fully to its brilliant peak, Shu'er arrived in the city of Yangdi without her trademark medicine cabinet or her assistant. The young woman seemed in no hurry, strolling around town for most of the morning and striking up light conversation with the shopowners and farmers she passed. In fact, had it not been for her deep red clothing and the sword visible across her back, she would no doubt have drawn no attention at all as just another traveler.

Eventually, she made her way to city's government centre, hers eyes darting about in unfeigned curiosity. Pulling a rather smudged letter from her pack, she waved at one of the guards nearby. "Hi there!" she greeted cheerfully. "Is there a Master Bei Tianmeng here?"

The guard turned his attention towards the young woman that was waving to him. Snapping to attention, the guard bowed his head politely to the woman before answering, "Master Bei? Yes, he's been staying on the grounds much lately." The guard gestured back towards the old palace as he spoke. "Would you like me to escort you to his office? If not, I can request him to meet you at some other location? He's often very flexible and he's given us instruction to offer any new visitors these options." With a polite smile, the guard waited for the young woman's answer.

Before the Battle of Yingchuan

A grand military procession filed its way out of the city of Yangdi. Nearly fifteen thousand soldiers, most with only bare-bones armor and weapons, marched before the grand standards of Hann and Chu. The destination of this force was the holdout city of Yingchuan - the final step until complete unification of the province could be complete.

"It is a bright day," Ying Ranzhen, governor of Hann, mused as he shaded his eyes from the sun. He was standing on a raised platform looking out over the mass with the leading generals of the army. Beside him was the commander of the host and the Chief Aide of Hann, Zhang Liang. The young ruler turned to his adviser and tilted his head to the side. "We are fortunate that Yingchuan is only a few days march else the army's suffering would be too great."

There were five generals in all heading to Yingchuan. At a motion from their ruler, they bowed to the Chief Aide and Ranzhen unsheathed a decorative sword. It looked as though it had been freshly made; on its pommel was both the symbol for Hann and Chu, signifying the dual authorities of the state Ranzhen administered. He twirled it, careful not to cut anything off, and held it out to Zhang Liang hilt-first. "Let this sword silence your critics and herald your successes. You are my appointed in this fight - the arm of Yangdi and of this state. Bring honor to our state and peace to our kingdom, Master Zhang."

With the help of his aide, the elderly scholar knelt painfully on the ground to accept the sword and to say his thanks. Rising to his feet with difficulty, he laboriously drew the sword from its sheathe and held it aloft in the air. "For Lord Zhang, for Hann!" he said through clenched teeth. He was quickly bundled into his carriage by Huai Leng, where he collapsed to its floor with painful back spasms.
