Jiaoxi, the Forlorn

They were on the road again, crossing the flat farmlands along the shores of Hongze Lake as they made their way in a generally southward direction. Shu'er was her usual self, humming a catchy tune and moving like she didn't have a large wooden cabinet strapped to her back. Beside her, the smaller, exotically-dressed girl seemed to be sulking about something, arms crossed and cheeks cutely puffed up. Eventually, Shu'er couldn't help but tease her a little.

"Oh come on, Xiao-Chen," she pleaded playfully. "It wasn't as if I was trying to make fun of you."

"Hmmph..."

"And I do believe your story, you know...the parts that were true, at least."

"It's all true," came the annoyed reply, said with a slightly lilting accent despite her bad mood. The girl didn't look up, though, and Shu'er chuckled.

"Well, let's not talk about that anymore," the young doctor suggested lightly, glancing up at the sky. "We should reach a town soon, and I'll show you what I do so you can learn how to help. You know, since I'm feeding you and all."

Chen didn't respond, but simply kept on walking. Seeing that, another, more enigmatic smile lit up Shu'er's face, and she did the same, the rest of the trip passing in two-flavoured silence.

Vahn Trung Huu arrived at the gates of Changyi just before sunset. Addressing the gate sentry he said frankly,

"Sir, my name is Vahn Trung Huu and I've come to speak with your governor."

Guards nodded.

"Right this way sir." An escort of 8 guards brought the visitor to the Governor's meeting hall.

"Good day Master Vahn, I am Taishi Qiu, how may I help you?"

Lai arrived and embraced his brother.

"It is good that our plans are advancing. I'm telling you, Rui looks more stronger than before if that is possible. Impressive what you managed to acquire while I was away up north..."

They waited together for the others to arrive.

To work as a mercenary... Zhuwen wasn't expecting that. He had simply partied with a few people, and some had decided to follow him. In due time more people were joining and it seemed some were spreading rumors that the lazy man known as Zhuwen would lead a band of mercenaries. For the most part, Zhuwen took it casually, perhaps working as a mercenary for the time being did not seem too bad of a thought.

Having received a job offer, Zhuwen arrived at the designated location with a few men. Seeing a small entourage, Zhuwen walked up to the group and greeted the men.

"Yo. Ma Dieu I presume?"

Vahn smiled and offered a slow nod.

"Thank you for seeing me as I'm sure you are very busy so I'll try to be brief. I've come to inquire as to the state of your fair city. To see if you too are troubled mercenaries, raiders, thieves, and the corruption that so plagues other areas of our province and to both ask for and offer assistance in the matter.

Man shook his head no.

"Not particularly..."

Then he frowned.

"Why, have you heard of heavy bandit or mercenary activity?"

Vahn Cleared his throat quickly before he spoke.

"With the diminishing strength of Chu I fear social unrest. My village has been lucky enough to avoid such conflicts but I'm visiting the major cities to guage their stability and ensure they have Jiaoxi's best interests in mind. Should the cities lose stability I fear they may turn on each other and the smaller villages will inevitably suffer, my own included. I feel it would be best to make sure the cities are in agreement with each other on matters affecting the province as a whole. My scouts have heard rumors Pengcheng will face a serious threat in the coming months by rebels from Qi. My scouts say multiple armies are camped a safe but suspicious distance from Pengcheng and they've been joined by a brutish mercenary. Have you received such information? What do you plan to do? Surely they intend to control the whole of Jiaoxi including Changyi."
