Lin Xin's Audience Hall - Panyu

A messenger from the Qi capital arrived at the capital of Lin Xin, bearing a communique. It was a rather simple message.

Lord Lin,

You are hereby summoned, personally, to the city of Bashang by order of Supreme Commander Zhang Han. Attendance is imperative, tribute and reports are not necessary, timliness is of utmost importance.

A usual public boat arrives at Changsha province, nothing extraordinary. The only thing that is not usual is that Fu Guan is with them, his face is pale, and after the boat has landed, he rode out quickly with his horse, his face still pale. "Why do we have to use boat in the first place anyway?" grumble Fu Guan on his way, and after some riding, he finally arrived to the heart of the town. Then he dismounted, tied his horse near a tavern, and said to the guards: "Guards, I am here to meet with Lin Xin, or any of his lackeys available. I hope you can lead me to anyone of them."

The guards nod and one of them, a surly looking veteran, steps forward before saying, "Of course, I'm sure there's a lackey or two around. Of course we'll have to search you for weapons before allowing you entrance."

"Should have realized" said Fu Guan, and he gives his axe to the guards, and said: "Well, that's all I got. Nothing anymore, since my valuables are mostly burned out right now. So...." Fu Guan turning to the senior. "Everything in order?"

The guard accepts the axe and hands it over to his subordinate before sending a messenger forth to alert the Marquis of his visitor. After a polite bow he then orders another guard to escort Guan to the Audience chambers where he is formally announced. "Marquis, you have someone wishing to speak with you and his name is Fu Guan," says the guard after the ceremonial greetings had concluded.

The Marquis of Yue stood as Fu Guan was announced and walked around his desk to greet the visitor with a bow. "Welcome to Yue Master Fu. What can I help you with today?"

"How can you help me? Let's see...." Fu Guan thinks for a bit, before he decided to open up his mouth again, and speak up: "You can add me to your officer list, if you have any, or you can give me a new quarter. Any of your choice, really. The real question is, what can I do for you? That'll be more fitting."

Interesting response, the Marquis thought. Who is this man that is standing before him. Deciding this was no ordinary individual, but probably someone of talent, Xin indicated for a servant to fetch some refreshments as he gestured for Guan to take a seat.

"Alright Master Fu," replied Xin. "It seems you wish to support Yue's cause. What can you do for me?"

"I don't know. I don't know what I can do for you." said Fu Guan, in all of his honesty. "I may say that I can be a general, but lack of my instinct made me an under-skilled general, and maybe you have other better generals of your own. I call myself as a diplomat, and I know you'll have a better diplomat. Judging from that, I don't know what can I do for you, but in due time, maybe you'll help me to realize, what can I do for you."

Xin leaned forward in his seat as his tea was served. Fu would receive some wine or tea, whichever he preferred.

The Marquis' eyes narrowed as he studied the man before him. "I'm confused, Master Fu," Xin said. "First, you recommend that I ask what you can do for me. Then, when I do ask that question, you say you don't know the answer. Now why would you want me to ask you a question you don't know the answer to?"
