In their lacquered armour, the soldiers resembled a dark splash of blood on the ground before the city of Xianyang. Spears gleamed in the morning sun as the regiments formed up and he could see his own guard held the wings. They were the best horsemen of Sai and he did not regret giving them to this task.

It had troubled him deeply to not claim a decisive victory in Wu though now he was ready to face the invader and it lifted his spirits. Zu Yanghei was a solid thinker, a dependable man. It was true that he had not seen battle in his rise to power, but Yi Guang had reviewed the plans and found no fault with them. The Supreme Commander drew from his flask as he waited, relishing the thought of seeing his enemies destroyed before his eyes. News of the victory would reach across the Middle Kingdom and the thought was intoxicating. Yi Guang would see to it that all were informed of every detail.

The scouts reached Yi Guang, their horses almost dead under them from the manic ride. "Armed soldiers to the east, commander." the first one called before two of his companions, "The banners of Yin and Linjiang march with Chu." Yi swore softly. Shen Feng had allied himself to the warlord. The young commander had to make his decisions quickly, so that his troops saw only certainty in his responses.

"Ride to my cousins," Yi Guang said to the scout, though the man still panted like a dog in the sun. "Call for reinforcements from Wei. I will hold against whatever Ma Dieu can bring to the field."

Yi Guang watched the dust clouds as the enemy advanced. The royal cavalry held the wings and he nodded to himself at the sight of their fine horses, snorting and pawing at the ground. The troops stood resolute in rank. Their grim faces helped to steady the conscripts as the dust cloud grew larger and they all felt the earth tremble under their feet. Yi felt the gaze of the citizens on his back and he knew the Duke would be watching with every other man and woman who could find a place on the walls. Xinyang depended on them for survival, but they would not be found lacking. He watched the assembled armies of Chu, Linjiang, and Yin and he clenched his left fist in excitement. Let them come and see what he had for them!

The combined armies of Zhu Lizhi, Shen Feng and Ma Dieu marched on their powerful western enemy, Zu Yanghei, King of Qin and would-be restorer of the mighty Qin Empire. As had been the case in almost every battle since his rise to prominence in Chu, Ma Dieu's armies were outnumbered, but he intended to make up the difference by his mastery of the battlefield. Already some were calling him Brilliant Tactician Ma, and his reputation was terrifying.

On the far side of the field, however, Zu Yanghei's captain, Yi Guang was a general of much experience and talent himself, and he feared the former Chu Marshal not at all. Han Xin commanded his support, and he was ready to turn the battle into a bloody defensive churn that would maul the forces of Ma Dieu and put him in position to be hammered by the reinforcements King Zu swore were on the way to aid them.

As Yi Guang's forces moved into their prepared positions, he nodded to He Qi, who rode from his lines and galloped back and forth on the field between the two armies, calling out for Xian Long Rui to face him. His epithets grew more and more vile the longer he rode back and forth, but Xian never put on any apperance at all, and the red-faced efforts of He Qi went largely ignored. His army now in position, Ma Dieu dropped his fist, and three fiery arrows launched into the sky. In a nearby gully, sent there days before in anticipation for this battle, Xian Long Rui, Tai Ju Li and Fei Lai set heels to horses and charged out at the rear of Yi Guang's army. Their horsemen were lightly armored and lightly armed, but their surprise appearance in the rear of the men of Qin created much consternation. But none was it worse than in the units commanded by Tie Yi Tianshi, Han Xin and Jun Shan.

Both Jun Shan and Tie Yi Tianshi suddenly found that a portion of their own men, turncoats hidden in their ranks, were suddenly fighting them, breaking their lines and exposing them to the enemy. The horsemen joined them in moments, and suddenly large portions of Yi Guang's front lines were a seething. cpmfised mass of men, rather than a bristling wall of spears.

In the rear, Han Xin found himself the subject of a terrifying charge by the ferocious warrior Xian Long Rui, and he momentarily lost his head, fleeing towards the rear of his archer units. Xian, roaring, plunged into the lines of archers, laying left and right and sending them scattering. The massed formation of archers that would have been relied on to break the charge of Ma Dieu was rippled and shuddered, becoming more focused on its own problems.

At that moment, of course, Ma Dieu raised his Ogre's Axe high, and his army thundered forward with a roar. At that signal, another unit of soldiers thundered from the gully, this one heavily armored and under the masterful command of Zhang Han. His heavily armored ambush scythed into the flanks, forcing Yi to commit his reserves to try and stem the assault. As Tie Yi Tianshi desperately attempted to cut down the traitors and bring the front lines back into a firm spearwall, Ma Su and Ma Dieu struck his lines.

The impact was death to the men of Qin.

Ma Dieu ruptured the Qin lines, bursting through and into the rear as if he had encountered nothing but a silk robe to resist him. Ma Su, on his right wing, crashed into Jun Shan's weakened line, and the breach he created stretched for several hundred yards. Wheeling his horse, Ma Dieu saw his advantage, and ordered the signal be given for a full asasult. His men poured through the broken lines, cutting down confused and terrified men like wheat to a scythe.

Three hours later, Ma Dieu and his army stood triumphant. The heaps of Qin dead littered the feild in masses. More than half the Qin officer corps was in his hands and captured.

Qin was no more, and Ma Dieu and his allies stood victorious once again.

The army was in chaos and some had left the battlefield, the figures already distant specks among the hills. Could he yet save the battle? All the tactics were finished. It came down to a fight on the field and he did not have the numbers. The Chu army hammered the army of Sai with halberd and spear, cutting a trench right through the center. The relentless carnage was forcing Yi Guangs' ranks back on themselves, making them bunch up where they should have stayed apart. Yi Guang wiped sweat from his brow as he saw the enemy ripping through his spearmen as if they were unarmed. He could only watch frozen as they attacked from all sides, cutting the army of Sai to pieces.

It seemed only a moment before one of the marauding groups spotted him directing the battle. Yi Guang saw their faces light up as they saw the massive war banners of his unit. As he stared, he saw a dozen weapons posed in his direction and others yanking at reins to turn their mounts. Surely he was safe? Hundreds of his personal guard lay in their path, but they could not stop the advancing wave and he suddenly felt fear. They were demonic, these men from Chu. He had tried everything and still they came victorious. Many of them had been cut in the fighting, but they seemed to feel no pain as they charged with bloody hands.

A half-spent arrow thumped into his chest, sticking out of his armour and making him cry out. As if the sound released his fear, his nerve failed completely and he yelled for his guard, pulling his horse around by brute strength and hunching low in the saddle. Other shafts whistled over his head, killing men around him. Supreme Commander Yi Guang was mindless in the face of his own death, his confidence shattering, the battle was lost. He dug in his heels and his horse bolted, galloping through the ranks to leave his guard behind

He did not look down at the wide-eyed faces of his soldiers as they saw him desert them. Many threw down their weapons and simply ran, following his example. Some were knocked aside by his horse as they moved too slowly. His eyes blurred in the rushing wind and he knew nothing except the need to escape the cruel-faced Chu soldiers at his back. Behind him, his army crumbled in complete rout and the slaughter went on. The army of Chu rolled over the Sai soldiers, killing until their arms were exhausted and the mouths of their horses were white with frothy spit.

The sounds of battle faded into the distance as he galloped away. He looked back only once at the great roiling mass of fighting men, and shame and rage were bitter in his throat.

Winter Star could not match the speed of five veteran warhorses. The Chu riders tossed hooped ropes, lasso-ing the white steed with relative ease once they had tired it out. One rope found its end around Ding Yi's arm. She shouted in despair when the rope wrung tightly and forcefully yanked her left hand off Winter Star's reins. Rider and steed were brought to a halt, and more riders soon surrounded them to secure their capture.

The soldiers jeered while they half-dragged the struggling woman and put her in a small solitary cell. With the jarring sound of the metal celldoor closing behind her, Ding retreated and curled up in a far corner, her chokes and warm tears stung a bandaged wound on her neck as she began to weep inconsolably. It was an injury sustained before the battle, and it seemed that the wound had been aggravated, with some blood seeping through the bandages. The hapless young woman let out a muted wail, her hand held protectively over her wound, not daring to think of her fate.
