See the thing is, you can say that you disagree with me, or that you dont like my opinion, but dont ever presume to tell me that I am wrong in my opinion. To each his own and now I shall defend my own.
First off, who the hell are these bands? I have never heard of any of them. Most likely, they are just run of the mill nobodies who are spawned about every second when some teenage punks decide they can play music and hsould "change the world" through it. They arent known for a reason. They suck. Bands that are huge are huge for a reason. They have to have some talent, wether that be in mimicking talent or really having it. If a band is a nobody, thats their own fault.
The dead milkmen? The subhuman? From the names, I'm guessing your a punk fan, if not feel free to inform me of how wrong I am, again of course. The punk scene has few if any talented bands. And with names like those its no wonder.
You can say its not on a personal level to have 100,000 fans at a show, but the fact is that for the general populace, thats a damn good show. The energy of it, the screaming, the thrill of being with so many people who love the same music as you. And as for performances go, watch that live link I gave, Slipknot is the best live band today. Rolling Stone says so, VH1 says so, MTV says so and while I despise each of said sources, I am rather inclined to agree. Slipknot puts on one hell of a show that just flat out cant be beat. They bring it harder than anybody out there and do it better too . Slipknot is a new breed of band. And I doubt the "dead milkmen" could ever bring it like the Knot. Sorry to dash your hopes down son, but somebody had to.
And forgive me for being so wrong.....I do apologize for being an idiot.

It's pretty hard to come up with a good name for a band anymore. Most of them have been taken up by wannabes whose first action upon creating the band was to copyright the name. Even two classics; the Beatles and the Monkees, both had to change the spelling because someone else had used the actual name before. That's why you get silly names like Death Cab Cutie and Jimmy Eat World and etc.
Hmmm, Jimmy Eat World always reminded me of Boy Meets World. That show was good until they went to college. Then it just got weird. Like when Saved by the Bell was at college.
My college is an "artsy" type school. I think 2 of our 5 top programs are art and music. That said, there are concerts and all sorts of things everywhere constantly. I don't go to any of them, mostly because it's all whiny Goth Punk (see Emo) or Contemporary Christian. People who do go, though, go because they know the band. It's an evolved form of hanging out for most people. I can relate to the comments about small audiences for the concerts well because of this, I think. There aren't any large audiences around here at all, since there are so many bands, and people can only go to so many concerts (despite what some might believe). I don't think these people really have hopes of becoming full-blown famous, but maybe they do. If you ever hear of aNeWmE, Sidewalk Prophets, The Unusual Mix, Raising Daybreak, Noah West, Besty Walker, Jon McLaughlin, etc., let me know
But yeah, smaller audiences are a completely different animal. You can't knock someone for wanting to play for more people, though. Having 5000 people show up to your gig tends to pay more than 500, and while being poor and destitute can be nice for song writing, it generally isn't good for your health and well-being.

Generalized statements arn't that cool. Every band starts at small shows.Maggot wrote:I like the fat guy in the wife beater, he's my friend . Sorry, but you'll never convince me that a tiny show is better than a huge one. Besides, small shows usually dont have good bands.
I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise, just know there are good reasons for liking small shows.
I'd much rather be at a small show because it makes you feel closer to the band. Rather than having a giant rail and bouncers between the band and you.

Whoa, the ‘wrong again’ comment was intended to be friendly, sorry if it didn’t sound like it…
MTV and VH1 are terrible resources for music, they don't support independent music in the least bit. All both of those corporations (note I say corporations) only care about capitalizing on musical talent. This, in turn, creates bands with the only intention of making money and getting on MTV and VH1. Now they water down their lyrics and make sure they don’t portray any of their stances on controversial views in their lyrics in fear of losing fans and, in turn, losing money.
About band names, Subhumans feel like they are treated like subhuman in this world for actually having an opinion and voicing it. The Dead Milkmen was apparently from a book. Of course, names will always mean more to the band members than their fans.
My stance on music is that I like anything with meaning. There a few punk bands I like but just as many as I don’t like, I had a conversation earlier about how most are repetitive a lot are. However, the Dead Milkmen portray satirical views, most with intense meaning but they do have their random jam songs about Surfin’ Cows. Why haven’t you heard them? Well, maybe because they are from my immediate area (Philadelphia). Or maybe you just haven’t heard them, it’s not hard to believe as I am sure there are tons of bands I haven’t heard. Just because you haven't heard of a band doesn't mean they aren't good, there are tons of new bands I find through various sources that amaze me. My problem with Slipknot is that their lyrics are just meaningless symbolism that tries to portray a point when there really isn’t one to begin with, they just wrote them to make money. To me, the Dead Milkmen making a song about how unsubstantiated attacks on homosexuals and lesbians are has a lot more meaning than, to me, than ‘kneeling down and clearing stones and leaves.’ Yard work isn’t very fun
But like you said, to each his own. I guess you like huge shows and I like small shows. Sorry, I didn’t mean to sound antagonizing.

You're saying that being able to hang out with Trivium after one of thier shows they played at a rock bar in my hometown isn't awesome? Corey is a pretty cool guy. I got to talk to him for a moment after the show before kids with cameras swarmed him >.>Maggot wrote:I like the fat guy in the wife beater, he's my friend . That was an insane show, a pub that could fit 200 in it full to capacity, the entire room turning into a huge mosh pit and seing people moshing in rhe balconies overhead.
The next one they did was like that except that time the owners somehow managed to cram in 400 people in a pub only meant for 200 . Yeah so imagine what it would have been like once that all kicked off ^_^;;

Pyro, I wasnt talkin bout 200 people man lol, thats a decent show to me. One of my favorite bands plays shows like that. The Melvins. Now I admit, their name sucks, but these guys are talented. They usually play about 200-300 people.
Ahah!
I'm ethereal, my children are legion, serial
They stick to my skin like beloved cysts
I tear away with my nails and teeth and fists
Touch the hands of inverted saints
Follow my heart through the threaded pain
Callow man is a sentinel screaming
I see the future; the future is bleeding
Sores, every goddamn minute I can feel 'em now
Like a virus, you will never kill me now
Goin' underground, comin' on like hepatitis
We're out - and you can't reshape us
Another bug in the construct
Tearin' up the main bus B
Zeros and ones are everything - execute me
Everywhere you look, it's like they know
Their fingerprints are hidden by CONTROL
This is where the line is drawn, see
YOU CAN'T TAKE MY SOUL AWAY FROM ME
What do you need to see? Ya feel the impact?
Gotta retract - everybody get back
What is this? It's like a big conspiracy
Fields of dejected morbid progeny
They always say that it's always our fault
But everything we say is taken with a grain of salt
Man, it's always the same, if we talk or complain
We only wanna upset the balance
How's it feel to be the New Abortioin?
The only generation to suffer extortion
Everywhere you look, it's like they know
Their fingerprints are hidden by CONTROL
This is where the line is drawn, see

I knew this was coming, I could tell by the way you were talkin bout the knot. Have you ever even read their lyrics dude? And, before you go on speaking about how they like to make money, do you know how many times they have been dropped by their label for not doing what was "popular" at the time? Come on, you think a song titled "People = Shit" is politicaly correct man? Every song they write, has meaning my friend. And meaning that matters. You ever read the lyrics for New Abortion or Eyeless or Pulse Of the Maggots? New Abortion has great meaning to the current state of this generation. Eyeless has great meaning to material possessions and stardom. Pulse Of the Maggots is a great example of what the Knot is about brother. So before you go spoutin off about how Slipknots lyrics suck, actually read them dude. Then have an opinion. Heres New Abortion for yaMy problem with Slipknot is that their lyrics are just meaningless symbolism that tries to portray a point when there really isn’t one to begin with, they just wrote them to make money.

I used to be a Slipknot fan when they first got major recogition (I was about 10 or 11 so I'd say that was about 1997 or so) so I only know the one album that I used to listen to when they first got big. So I'm not familliar with their new stuff but even things like that, to me, are just said for shock value. And some shock value, to me, makes lyrics cliche because it just becomes unoriginal. Maybe Slipknot started this trend but either way, I feel it makes them boring. I listen to those words and it's just feels like he forced the rhymes when he was writing lyrics and tried to tie in symbolism. Maybe it means something to him, I don't know the singer to ask him, but that's just the feeling I get when I hear his stuff. It always comes down to personal taste and like you said earlier, it's completely a matter of opinion.
I am sorry about earlier, I re-read what I said and it sounds vindictive, I didn't mean it to sound that way.

See, I like that. You apologized. Thats kind and civil of you. Now, on the "Stones and leaves" comment earlier and the shock value comment, The lyric "Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves" is in reference to the past, wich in said particuliar song is coming up again in crude terms. Basically its saying how hate seems to be the popular feeling world round right now. I could into a much more elaborate explanation but I doubt you would read half of it. The shock value thing was indeed started by them because, lets face it, nobody listens when you tap them on the shoulder anymore. So, they take a different approach. Tapping doesnt work? Then how bout a swift fist to the face? Speak quietly and few qill pay any heed, yell it and people start listening. The shock value was what first got them attention, no band had ever been round like them before. The lead singer of anthrax describes their sound best
Dont think just because Slipknot is huge that they are corperation lackey, money hungry, stereotypical metal heads. I can respect the fact that the bands your talkin bout are trying to do something (((Though I would certainly have to see their lyrics before I passed judgement))), but you cant buy into the stereotype that Slipknot is just a facade. Really take a look at em man. They do as they preach. Last show they gave in San Jose(((Close to me))) was free to all who showed up. An estimated five thousand people showed dude. I went and couldnt get in. Dont judge before you really research it man.Slipknot is like, if you could control chaos and turn it into a musical force, thats Slipknot man. Amazing.

I don't know too much about Slipknot but in all honestly, what I have heard from them just doesn't make me want to learn more. I wasn't really trying to imply that they were money hungry, I can't be certain unless I know more about them, but the lyrics of theirs that I read just felt like forced rhymes, and forced rhymes seem to me like a band that just wants to make money so they throw words together. Maybe you can get that out of them but I really don't see that, it's too far fetched and I feel like the artist throws symbolism into a song to make it basically into whatever the listener wants it to be about, so they're just playing on the emotions and feelings of the listener without meaning anything themselves. That is just how I feel. But like I said, I can't expect myself to make a real judgement unless I know more about them.

I just recently became a Slipknot fan, I have their new CD and thats the only one this stupid K-Mart has. I really enjoy it, especially the beginning of Pulse of the Maggots.
Their whole CD was teh bomb though.
