Liu Bang then asked Han Xin, who had served under Xiang Yu but was driven out, "what is Xiang Yu's weakness? Is there a way to defeat him?" Han Xin calmly replied, "No, Xiang Yu himself is invincible, he is destined to be king."
As soon as the scouts report the approach of the swift moving light horse and their archer and infantry supports, Fan Zeng begins giving orders. His orders come sharp and angry, for he had not expected betrayal of this magnitude. He knew who the tatoo'ed bandit was - and he knew who would have dispatched him. Ordering six thousand spearmen to form up, he ordered Rou Jang to take commmand and form a defensive position, Zeng ordered Cao Wushang, Shuang Zhuang and Lang Cong to support him.
He then took the other four thousand spearmen, equipped them with slings and had them form two squares behind Rou Jang's troops, giving Mei Xuan the command of one of the groups. Emperor Yi, terrified by the situation, put his carriage as close to Fan Zeng as he could, and his bodyguard Ma Chao stood resolutely outside of the carriage, a slender spear in his hand.
On a nearby ridge, the two bandit leaders of the horsemen pulled rein, looking down on the formation quickly laid out by Fan Zeng. The angry bandit spit on the ground and glanced at the tattoo'ed one. "Fan Zeng is no fool. Do not take this battle lightly."
The tattoo'ed bandit stared back at him with cold eyes. "He is a fool to oppose our master, and now I am death, come for him. Go down and rid us of that worthless dog who leads their front lines."
With a twist of his lips the angry bandit galloped down the hill on his fine horse and paraded it back and forth before the lines of the enemy. With a sneer, he rose up and pointed at Rou Jang. "I see your mother fell in love with a weasel. Nothing else could explain your face."
For a brief moment, Rou Jang considered charging out to face the powerfully built man, but finally, with a show of contempt, he turned his back on him.(Challege refused, -3 morale Fan Zeng's forces)
As the tattoo'ed bandit watched his lieutenant attempt to lure out Rou Jang, his own support archers caught up to the fast moving cavalry, and began taking position on a slope across from Fan Zeng's army. As it became clear that Jang was not going to fall into the trap laid for him, he turned to the Smelly Bandit in charge of the archers, barking out orders for them to begin firing on the enemy line. As the arrows began to fall, he turned his horse, waved his sword over his head and let out a battle scream, charging down the slope at the head of a thundering line of horsemen. The impact of the horsemen into the lines of Rou Jang's spearman shook the heavens, and corpses and dead horses littered the field,
As both the Smelly Bandit's archers and the Tatto'ed Bandit wreaked havoc on Rou Jang and tried to shatter his effectiveness, a focused barrage of slingstones unloaded by Fan Zeng's soldiers struck the archers on the ridge. The stones were methodical, and deadly, and the Smelly Bandit began panicking when he saw the rate at which his men were falling, skulls and limbs crushed by the well aimed fire guided by Fan Zeng.
While the bandit archers were dying, however, the three different bandits leaders took turns leading thundering charges again and again into the lines of spearmen. As his men fell, suddenly Rou Jang found himself face to face with the rearing hooves of the tattoo'ed bandit, and the man raised his sword to end Rou's life, only to be suddenly swept away by a sudden rush by Mei Xuan's support spearman. Infuriated, the bandit turned to chase Mei Xuan's men, and Rou Jang was able to scramble to safety, rallying his dwindling forces behind him.
As the sun crept towards the horizon and nightfall, the bandits broke off their attack, gathering on the ridge and assessing their forces. Fan Zeng too studied his lines. There was next to nothing left of his main line, and his hope of breaking the enemy support layer had been dashed when he had been forced mid battle to break off concentrating his deadly barrages on the enemy archers, and instead worked to delay the assault of the charging horsemen any way he could. The battle was not looking promising, and the Emperor cowered in his carriage, aware the end may be near soon.

It only took a few moments for Fan Zeng to make up his mind as to his next course of action. He began dispatching orders, sending Cao Wusheng to form up an escort for the Emperor with Ma Chao and to get them safely off the field of battle. As soon as the sun had slipped the horizon, Mei Xuan was to take the lead and flee the field with the support layer, followed by those remaining soldiers and commanders in the Melee force. Rou Jang was to command the rearguard.
The Tatto'ed bandit, confident in his ability to shatter the force before him ordered his men to form up in their divisions and water their horses. The Angry bandit approached and spat out, "Why don't we finish them now?"
"We will. We attack as the sun sets. These slopes are perfect for a night chage."
Both forces then waited for the same signal, watching as the sun descended towards the eastern western hills. As its last rays slipped below the Horizon and then faded from the night sky, Mei Xuan began his withdrawl, his men moving swiftly and quietly towards a nearby pass. As the men filed past Fan Zeng, following Mei, Fan thought he could hear the sound of thunder. At first, he was pleased, thinking the rain would help cover his retreat - but then he realized it was the sound of thousands of hooves as the Tattoo'ed men launched his assault.
In moments, everything was chaos. Men and horses were screaming, and the neat lines of retreating men had dissolved into panicked flight. Roaring orders, Fan Zeng tried to fight his way back down the line toward where the Emperor was.
Out of the darkness materialized Rou Jang and Lang Cong, both holding injuries as they and their men struggled forward.
"Where is the Emperor!?" Fan Zeng cried.
"He is lost! They took him, Cao Wusheng and Ma Chao in the first charge!" Lang groaned as he struggled past the Minister. "Rou Jang tried to fight his way to his side, but there were too many . . . too many!"
Fan Zeng stared wildly into the darkness, and then leapt for his carraige, heading for the battlefield.
"No, Minister!" Lang shouted, trying to slow the old man from going back, but when Fan refused to listen, he looked at Rou Jang, then back at Fan Zeng. Shaking his head, he swung the butt of his spear at the back of the Prime Ministers head, knocking him cold. Struggling, the two injured officers loaded Fan back into the carraige, and escorted the force from the field.
Behind them, the Emperor was dragged bodily from the carraige, Mao Chao and Cao Wushang already bound and thrown face first in the dirt. The tatto'ed bandit rode up and dismounted, looking down coldly on his prisoners.

"Here I was hoping to dismember Zeng, but you will do..." Bu said with a snort, his eyes falling upon the captives. Placing his hand upon the hilt of his sword he moved himself in front of Ma Chao and Cao Wusheng. For a split second he thought of saying something to these men. To address them and their loyalty and decisions in some way or another. Pulling his sword from the sheath he thrust the blade into the Wusheng's back.
