Please send copies of the tactics to me - and Zhao Ren - ASAP.

The Campaign Against Yan, August 206 BC

With nearly forty-five thousand men, the Marshal of Jiaodong, Fang Ai, fresh from his complete victory over Han Guang, was ordered to attack and overcome the state of Yan, intending to subjugate this distant wilderness in the name of the Marquis of Jiaodong. Coordinating the logistics of this most difficult and expansive campaign was the General Mang Liaoyo, whose talents in such a field were quite renowned already, adept in marshaling his men with good speed. Supported by the Generals Yang Yu, Cao Cao, and Xiahou Cao, Fang Ai marched his troops towards the Northlands, intending to make a multi-pronged assault upon the holdings of Wen Luan.

The Administrator of the cities of Yan, Wen Luan, was a rather quiet and secluded woman, appearing rather suddenly in the city of Ji at the head of a mob that overthrew the former governor of that region. Having secured the land of Yan with the aid of the mystical Xia sisters, Wen Luan had seemed to taken a political view that matched her rather silent demeanor. This attempt at being innocuous, however, did her little good when the men of Jibei marched on her province. Alerted to such an attack, Wen Luan appointed, curiously enough, two of her chief civil officials to lead her defense: an administrator of the Liaodong region by the name of Liao Guang, and a scholar named Hu Kang.

Riding ahead of the army with a few dozen men, the daring Cao Cao attempted to seek out and best one of Wen Luan's officers. Near the town of Renqiu, he found a picket led by one of the silent sisters, Xia Dunqiao. Though try as he might, tossing out innuendos and threats at the woman, he did not manage to goad her into a duel. Angered over this, Cao Cao urged his men into battle, with the skirmish marking the first blood of the campaign. Liang Feng, who was normally an administrator of a minor degree, tried his best to order a few men to attack the personal guards of Xia Dunqiao, though this was all in vain. Dispatching one of her men to inform the commander of Wen Luan's armies, Xia Dunqiao put up an admirable defense against the raid by the two officers. With enemy reinforcements speedily arriving under the command of Jeje Ecan, Cao Cao and Liang Feng took to flight and established an encampment two li south of the town with the aid of Tie Hou.

Having lived in the land of Yan for much of his life, the half-Beidi Yilin Rou sought to cause rockslides throughout the various mountain passes, denying Fang Ai the chance to flank the armies of Wen Luan. Several li to the south of Tuying, as Yilin Rou was setting up his blockades, he spotted a detachment of men swiftly marching towards him. The banner that flew in the late summer wind was that of the Magistrate of Pingyuan, Xiahou Cao. With a dramatic gesture with his spear, the Black Horseman of Changshan ordered his company to attack the soldiers of Yilin Rou. Fortunately for the men of Yan, it was at that moment the core of Wen Luan's armies arrived. Reinforced by Xia Qunbu, Yilin Rou managed to hold her own as Hu Kang blandly ordered a counterattack against Xiahou Cao with Liao Guang's support. Seeing several of his guards falling by his side, Xiahou Cao withdrew to reform his lines.

With most of the opposition far inland, Fang Ai took to the coastal route, which lead up towards the newly established town of Oro. Liao Guang knew that there was potential for this road to be used by the enemy and had thus sent a contingent of men under the command of the psycho, Tie Niangzi. While the depraved warrior waited, allowing the veteran commander Bai Guan to patrol the area, Fang Ai set his plan in motion. Suddenly, a flurry of arrows flew overhead, javelins following soon thereafter. Tie Niangzi shrieked out a command, Bai Guan soon echoing it, but the archers under the command of General Yang Yu were simply too much to deal with. A pause in the hail of missiles only came when men under Shuo A surged forward, flooding over the outer perimeter set up by Bai Guan. Seeing the discipline in his enemy collapsing, Fang Ai marshaled his men into a perfect formation, and soon swept up the town. Tie Niangzi put up a stubborn rearguard defense, coming daringly close to wounding the Marshal of Jiaodong, but ultimately she, too, was put to flight.

With the coastal town of Oro captured, the men of Jibei began to spread out and occupy the region, easily off-setting the setbacks Cao Cao and Xiahou Cao had experienced further to the west. With Ji itself soon becoming threatened, Liao Guang withdrew much of his men from the outskirts of Tuying, pulling off to the east to defend his liege. One might wonder what became of Tu Hun and Taishi Bei, two remarkably talented leaders under Wen Luan, but in a case that would be mirrored by the Flying General, Li Guang, in an alternate reality, neither commander managed to find the enemy when he needed to most, but instead found themselves patrolling the region of Zhuojun.

Knowing that their setbacks did not matter much to the Marshal's grand scheme, both Cao Cao and Xiahou Cao fortified their positions outside of Renqiu and Tuying respectively. Jeje Ecan, who had come to save Xia Dunqiao, thought now would be a good time to try and taunt Cao Cao about his failure to seize Renqiu. Just as he rode out to do so, his mind full of perfect jeers and insults, he saw the fearsome display of Cao Cao riding hard at him. Failing to find words, Jeje Ecan opted for a girly scream and fled. This unfortunately overcame the terrible image of Cao Cao, whose attempt to frighten the men under Xia Dunqiao faltered under the riotous laughs of both his men and especially that of the enemy. Defeated, Cao Cao sulked back to his lines.

Arriving at Yangzi, Fang Ai ordered the man of his army to encamp and recover for a few days, feeling it best that his men were well rested before they laid siege to Ji, and Shanggu soon thereafter. Expecting that his deputies would keep a diligent guard up, Fang Ai retired into his tent for the first day of rest in over a week. He was awoken to screams of terror in the middle of the night. Emerging from his tent, sword in hand, Fang Ai's eyes went wide with shock. Tie Niangzi had managed to break into his encampment with support from Hu Kang. Worst of all, the insane harlot of a woman was there before him, having slit the throat of one of his guards. Fang Ai raised his sword in self-defense, managing to deflect a blow from Tie Niangzi's foreign blade. Things were looking quite dire for the Marshal of Jiaodong...

Fortunately, his deputies were not that incompetent. Yu Zhang let out a cry of, "Revere the Marquis, expel the barbarian!", a call that was echoed by many of the men of Jibei as they rushed to defend their commander. Administrator He Chen personally led a small squad of men and drove the terror of the night back into the darkness. As the sun rose, a hail of arrows volleyed at the enemy by the direction of Yang Yu was enough to send the enemy running. It was only through the discipline of Bai Guan that the Army of Yan was not broken that day at Yangzi, though Magistrate Shuo A tried his best to surge over the defenses. As Liao Guang arrived later that day, surprisingly late, he found that he had to withdraw, leaving the city of Ji to its fate.

Still quite wroth over his failure earlier, Cao Cao was determined to make the best of a bad situation. The soldiers of Xia Dunqiao were still snickering days later about the hilarious scene between Cao Cao and Jeje Ecan, leaving their patrols lax and their defenses open. Polishing his armor to a mirror shine, Cao Cao took his axe and stormed out of his encampment. With little warning, the men of Xia Dunqiao soon heard Cao Cao yelling, "Ooga booga boo!" While the battlecry itself was not intimidating, seeing Cao Cao personally hack his way to Xia Dunqiao was. Though the silent sister did her best to defend herself, her weapon was cut free from her hand and she was taken captive. Jeje Ecan, coward that he was showing himself to be, was found to have fled shortly after Cao Cao's scream. The region of Renqiu was now free of the enemy, and Lieutenant General Cao Cao continued his march north towards Shanggu.

Meanwhile, outside the town of Tuying, Yilin Rou was having little success at building any effective road blocks. Indeed, the only thing that seemed to be blocked was his mind. Fortunately, Xiahou Cao had the perfect solution for the ailment similar to writer's block: a sortie! Leading his men in a quick hit-and-run attack against Xia Qunbu's men, the cavalier Magistrate of Pingyuan redeemed himself for his earlier defeat, personally cutting down over two dozen of Xia Qunbu's men. The attack was fierce, and though the silent sister, Xia Qunbu, tried her best to hold, it was to no avail. The town of Tuying had to fall. She would withdraw to the town of Gengwu, and from there make her last stand against the Black Horseman of Changshan.

With Ji temporarily in his hands, Fang Ai felt confident now that he could rest his men for a short while. Only Shanggu and the remaining soldiers under Liao Guang opposed him, after all. Once they were defeated, Yan would fall under the reign of the Marquis of Jiaodong. Surely, he thought, Liao Guang would not dare attack him after so many losses at Yongzi! Surely he would not try to attack the city of Ji itself. Unfortunately, Fang Ai did not realize just how bloody insane Tie Niangzi was. Showing that history, indeed, repeats itself, Tie Niangzi showed herself to be quite a lady of the night. If such a lady killed men by the dozens and cackled in maniacal glee. The attack itself seemed to be a stroke of genius, also, as Yang Yu's archers proved to be quite ineffective within the city itself, removing the deadliest threat to the raid. With support from Liao Guang himself, it was only Administrator Tie Hou that saved the Marshal from danger, successfully shielding Fang Ai from the raiders.

While the raid was to quite deadly effect, Liao Guang knew that they could not linger. Ji was lost to Fang Ai, for the time being. Shanggu had to be defended. As Liao Guang fought a fighting withdrawal, Bai Guan leading the rear defense, Magistrate Shuo A saw a rare sight indeed. The scholar, Hu Kang, who had been placed in nominal charge of nearly half of Yan's armies, was just some few hundred yards away. Though Shuo A made an admirable attempt to seize the lazy scholar, it was ultimately unsuccessful. As Liao Guang's few remaining men pulled off to Shanggu, Yu Zhang delivered a most inspired speech to the troops under Fang Ai. "Certainly," he concluded, "now Yan is ours." From how few men remained under Liao Guang, in flight on all fronts, it seemed likely that this was the truth.

Re: August 206 Provincial Invasion of Wen Luan

Post by Zhao Ren »

The Campaign Against Yan, August 206 BC

As Cao Cao surged towards the new capital of Yan, Shanggu, he received orders to divert his march to intercept the other silent sister, Xia Qunbu. Figuring that capturing one was easy enough, Cao Cao urged his men onwards towards the town of Gengwu, where she was rumored to be. His aide for the campaign, Administrator Liang Feng, continued onwards, intending to meet up with the Marshal of Jiaodong for the siege of Shanggu. Linking up with the Magistrate of Pingyuan, Cao Cao rode to the front of the army and shouted out a challenge to the town of Gengwu. They would deliver Xia Qunbu over to him for an honorable duel, or they would suffer the consequences. While the Lieutenant General may have thought that threats would be better received than insults, which did not work against the other Xia sister, he was disappointed when the only response to the challenge was the panicked screams of the citizens of Gengwu.

Deciding that enough was enough, Xiahou Cao rallied his men and led a charge through the streets of the town, riding with the vanguard with no reservation or concern. When Yilin Rou heard the shout from Cao Cao, he immediately attempted to shore up the defenses of the town. This unfortunately put the half-Beidi diplomat on the front lines. Xiahou Cao, at the head of his troops, saw the enemy officer attempting to coordinate the defenses of the town and immediately advanced on him. Though Yilin Rou threw up his arms in self-defense, flesh was hardly a good shield from a spearhead. With a large gouge to his arm, Yilin Rou was taken into custody by the Black Horseman of Changshan. Xia Qunbu was found within one of the few buildings of the town, caught completely off-guard by the Magistrate's charge.

Finally figuring out where the enemy was, Taishi Bei and Tu Hun quickly marched to the closest allied stronghold that they knew of: Gengwu. With Xia Qunbu's troops, they felt that they could stand to defend against the troops of Xiahou Cao and perhaps turn the tide of the war. As they approached the town, they realized just what a horrible mistake they had made, that fate had played a terribly dirty trick upon them. Outnumbered dramatically, with Tie Hou approaching from the rear, the two commanders laid down their arms and surrendered to the Magistrate of Pingyuan, being placed within a cage with the other captives that Xiahou Cao had captured. With Gengwu fallen, Xiahou Cao ordered his men onwards, intending to link up with Fang Ai to lay siege to the city of Shanggu.

What they did not know was that the Marshal of Jiaodong did not intend to lay siege to Shanggu. The war would end far before then, he hoped, upon the plains between Ji and Shanggu. Allowing Yu Zhang to deliver yet another encouraging speech to the men, Fang Ai ordered that the men of Jibei abandon all but their arms and armor, that they needed to pack light, for they would be marching hard. Although Shuo A and He Chen tried to mobilize the army in order, the soldiers were simply too ecstatic to be controlled, so great was their desire to bring an end to this campaign and to return home to the land of Jibei. Though Fang Ai may have appreciated a tighter formation, he marched out nonetheless.

He met the enemy just north of Yuyang. With a nod to Yang Yu, the Marshal of Jiaodong watched with silent satisfaction as a perfect volley of arrows flew threw the air and cut down much of the men of Liao Guang, who clearly did not expect Fang Ai to pursue him so vigorously. Caught with an arrow lodged in his thigh, the administrator handed control of the army over to Hu Kang, who in turn delegated the defense to the veteran Bai Guan. Though he knew this was a terrible situation, Bai Guan did not know what he could do to save the men now under his command. He could only watch with horror as the tens of thousands of men under Fang Ai flooded over him, the screams of the wounded and dying drowning out all other noises.

The battle of Yuyang brought an end to the campaign to secure Yan for Shi Tong, with Shanggu falling mere days later after token resistance. Fang Ai's bold march to intercept the men of Liao Guang before they returned to Shanggu had paid off quite splendidly, with almost every officer placed in the field against him now in his custody. Only two men eluded him: the cowardly Jeje Ecan, who was rumored to have fled to the hills of Liaodong, and an observer by the name of Wie Zong. Even the fearsome Tie Niangzi was found an indignant captive of his men, having finally lost the strength to terrorize the Marshal anymore. Hu Kang had managed to elude his men for a few days following Yuyang, but was soon captured personally by Xiahou Cao after Hu Kang attempted to waylay and destroy that contingent of men.

((Housekeeping for staff))

The melee and support layers, with all armaments (including spoils) will be integrated into Invasion Force. All captured troops will be put into the Jibei Field Army.

We will attempt to recruit all of the NPC's (everybody but Tie Niangzi, I believe).

Tie Niangzi is brought before the commanding officers of the armies of Shi Tong. She was disarmed, bound, and kept under guard by three men at all times, although allowed to remain on her feet. Fang Ai arrived, having spoke to the other prisoners previously. When he came before her, he seemed a bit distracted. "You fought well," he said. "I never begrudge a man for defending what he believes in. I know nothing of you, and would hope that your story does not end here. But on the same vein, I know nothing of you. Did you fight out of loyalty to your lady or out of loyalty to the land?"

((Announcing that I am in fact a PC.))

Hu Kang shivered, pale as a ghost, his simple robe decorated with the stains from old vomit, possibly his own, possibly someone else's. He considered asking permission to write a letter to Ping, but what was the use? Ping couldn't read. He sat still and waited to know of his fate.

Liao Guang, still in great pain from the wound delivered to him at Yuyang, laments his fate and requests to retire back to Liaodong so that he may die in peace. Taishi Bei and Tu Hun, having contributed almost nothing to the defense of Yan, simply shrug and agree to help Shi Tong in Yan. Bai Guan, while most upset that he was overcome by Fang Ai, begrudgingly accepts the offer of service. Di Ai, an observer for Wen Luan, praises Fang Ai's genius in the campaign and eagerly agrees to serve. Xia Qunbu remains characteristically quiet, glaring daggers at her captor. She is joined by her sister in the silent treatment. Yilin Rou shakes his head and mumbles to himself about what he should have done differently.

((Shoot, sorry))

Fang Ai also had Hu Kang brought before him, along with Tie Niangzi. He would have been able to hear much of what Fang Ai said to Tie Niangzi. And after he was in, Fang Ai turned to him as well. "What of you?" he asked. "Was your loyalty to Yan or to Wen Luan?"

((Again, for staff))

All NPC's not recruited are taken to the edge of the Yan-Changshan border and released.

Kang didn't stop shaking, though despite being at Shi Tong's mercy, remained as composed as possible, allowing some nervous stuttering. "N-neither," he admitted. "M-my oathbrother, h-has my loyalty. H-his loyalty is...h-hard to distinguish. He worked f-for Wen Luan. N-not fiercely loyal to her. I d-don't know where he is n-now. I merely w-w-wish to be with him."

Fang Ai gave the man a slight look of pity. "Well then," he said, "I will have you released so you can look for him. I see no reason to spill more blood today. Be sure not to find yourself on the battlefield opposing us again, though, as we may not be as kind."

Later that day, Hu Kang is led a ways from the encampment and released.
