The Battle for Changyi


The armies settled across an open field. The banners of Magistrate Hin Wu high and clear as the day; a force of formidable size. Ill-equipped but it seemed of little concern as the hurried protectors of Changyi lined up with no better preparations. Hin Wu was present himself, in command of the relief forces with Zheng Peishuo in support. Ling Dao commanded the advanced line, assisted with commanders, Gong Ang, Xun Kan and Zuan Cui. Across them they faced fewer but no less capable men of calibre; Taishi Qiu and Xiahou Jin combined to hold the line and Qiong Xiao charged with the auxiliaries.

The engagement started no sooner than the sun had risen. Mass came upon mass, the superior numbers favouring the armies of Hin Wu. Taishi Qiu mustered a significant force to engage the enemy vanguard. Xun Kan's attempt to reach and faze him failed. Hin Wu's attempt to confuse the force under Taishi Qiu did little as he organised his defences well which caused difficulties as Gong An failed to urge his men to break the lines. Ling Dao sought to take matters into his own hands and leading a platoon of his own men flanked Taishi Qiu's position. Qiong Xiou's auxiliaries became aware of Ling Dao's attempts and did their best to mislead but became distracted as Xiahou Jin attempted a raid on the Changyi supply lines. Caught between dividing attentions, Ding Lao smashed through auxiliary lures and hit into Taishi's position. Unfortunately, Taishi Qiu had prepared well and the raid did little to dent the defensive lines. Similarly, Qiong Xiou's defensive formations ensured the supply wagons remained undisturbed from Xiahou Jin's raids. The fighting was bloody, concentrated as forces converged around the well mustered position of Taishi Qiu. While many losses were inflicted against Hin Wu's forces, they were equalled for the other. The outcome was inevitable...
