If Huang Wei had been slightly haughty in his previous speech, then the same could be said of Haoqi as he replied to the simultaneous promise of aid and threat of death.
"I lead Donga in revolt against Shang Pang and have declared myself an enemy of the King of Qi, do you think I would shy away from gaining the help of a capable follower because I feared death? I will accept your terms Huang Wei and you may take my head if I fail to defeat Tian Dan when the time comes." he said. "Since you do not wish to stay in the city, you may camp nearby with your men and I will see to it that all necessary provisions are made for your stay. I dare say your men will want paid for their services as well."

Lin Ying made her way through city to the palace, maybe this would be the place she was looking for. Her clothing looked worn from significant travel, but the bow on her back was in perfect condition and well maintained. She recalled the Lord's request for wise people and smiled, the wise can run things after those like her get done. Approaching the guards at the palace she gave a slight bow.
"My name is Lin Ying, I have heard that your Lord is looking for people to help him bring stability to this region. If he is available I wish an audience with him."

Zhang Xing and his two compatriots rode into the flood plains outside of Donga, headed towards the city that lay there. Here in Qufu, he knew the dire situation of the land. He and his bodyguards rode through the flatlands up to the city gates, and gazed up towards the ramparts, awaiting a city official.

A full compliment of Qufu's finest stood watch over the palace gates and though they lacked the expensive and impressive arms and armour that the guards of a man of nobility might have, they made up for it in their undeniable discipline. All but one of them remained unmoved as the visitor arrived and it was clear that the one who had come forward and reciprocated the bow was of a higher rank, a captain most likely.
"You're in luck, Lin Ying, the Prefect returned to the palace not more than an hour ago. I'll send a man to inform him you're coming." he said and nodded to one of his men, who opened the gate and dashed off through. "If you would be so kind as to leave the bow with us, I'll lead you to him. We don't allow weapons into the palace under any circumstances, not after the attempt on Lord Cai's life."
The captain wore a friendly but slightly bemused smile as he awaited a reply from Lin Ying. Cai Xingzhe had few personal visitors and fewer still were women, this was in fact the first, as it happened. Women with weapons seemed to be an alarming trend in the mind of this guardsman but if she felt she had something to offer to the Prefect then far be it from him to deny her an audience on the grounds of her gender.

As it was already dusk now, the city gates had been closed in the belief that anybody reputable who wished to enter the city would have done so by now. However as one guard made his rounds along the city walls, he heard the unmistakeable clatter of hooves on sun-hardened dirt beneath the gate house. With a careful glance across the ramparts, he confirmed that there was indeed someone looking to enter Qufu at this odd hour and moreover that there were three off them looking right back at him.
"We've got visitors, sir!" he called out into the gloom and the gate captain appeared beside him in a flash. "Three of 'em. Look."
"I see them, carry on." the captain said after a quick glance.
He set off at a trot and retrieved a detatchment of ten guards from the gatehouse, who formed a cordone around the inside of the gate until it could be acertained what these three wanted. The captain opened one side of the gate, allowing the three horsemen entry into the city and then looked them over with the look of suspicion that all soldiers reserved for out-off hours visitors.
"State your names and business in Qufu, please." he said flatly.

Ying raised an eyebrow at the mention of the attempt on the Lord's life. Without knowing the details of the attempt it was hard to tell if the person was extremely skilled or the guards here were really that inept. She slid the bow off her back and handed it to the guard.
"I understand regarding weapons, in these times I guess one can not be too safe or too careful. Please lead the way to your Lord."

Zhang Xing nodded towards his companions, spurring his horse into motion out to meet the retinue that had come to greet them. Zhang, clad all in the brilliant white-and-gold of his family, hailed the guard captain.Wokimo wrote:As it was already dusk now, the city gates had been closed in the belief that anybody reputable who wished to enter the city would have done so by now. Xing: Greetings, from Guiyang. My name is Zhang Xing, and these are my retainers; Tuan Ai and Ban Ren. We have come to offer our services to your Prefect. Forgive the lateness of my arrival, but your liege and I have a rather sordid history, and it was a long journey. I would be pleased if he could see us tonight.

The Captain took the bow with all due care and handed it to one of his subordinates, to be taken to the guardhouse for safe keeping. Meanwhile the captain bade Lin Ying follow on behind as he entered the palace compound and strode towards the palace proper.
As she was lead through the courtyard and into the palace, the sense of faded grandeur of this place would not have escaped the slightly dishevelled traveller, for everywhere around her were signs of the Kingdom of Lu's heydays. Stone statues of tigers, cranes and other majestic animals were abundant, their finer details faded now by the wind and the rain of several centuries. So too was there no shortage of greenery and plantlife in the gardens, but it had taken on a wild, unkept look now: not unpleasant but not the manicured perfection that one might have expected from a place that once housed a Prince. However, there were signs that restoration work was underway, as surveyors looked over every inch of the place and joted little notes to themselves with charcoal on stone tablets. Within a month or two the palace would be restored to its former oppulence, but Lin Ying was given little time to dwell on the state of the palace and soon found herself within the Audience Chamber. This room shared the signs of neglect and old age that the outside of the palace displayed, but it was at least tidy and did not detract from the decorum of the rooms chief occupant. Sitting on a simple wooden chair and backed by four soldiers, Cai Xingzhe looked down the hall at his visitor and smiled.
"Come in and be seated, Lin Ying. My guard informs me you have read my statement of intent and wish to speak with me on it. Have a cup of wine and then speak your mind." the Prefect indicted a similar seat to his own which sat ten feet or so from his dais. Wine was brought forward by a servant.

A few of guards exchanged glances and then looked to their captain for orders. He nodded and seemed to relax slightly, a change which was mirrored in the demenour of the men in his charge.
"Alright then. We'll take you to the palace and see if the Prefect is available." the captain rumbled and waved a hand signal to his men, who formed an escort around the horseman. "Sergeant close the gates now."
As the city gates thudded closed behind them, the escort moved off towards the centre of Qufu, presumably with Zhang Xing, Tuan Ai and Ban Ren in tow. There was little activity in the streets at this hour of night, only the occasional civilian and the odd patrol here and there but the sounds of activity within the homes still buzzed in the ears of the visitors, giving Qufu a sense of life, even after dark. However, the sounds from within the palace were stronger and harsher, almost as if there was a fight going on in the courtyard beyond the walls. The grating of steel against steel, the thudding of feet on cobbles and - from time to time - the gasp of a men exerting themselves in combat. The captain of the guard detatchment here, a man with strong arms and shaggy beard, looked positively delighted to hear the sounds of combat from within.
"A Master Zhang Xing to see the Prefect, Captain Zhuang... tonight if possible." he added as an afterthought.
"Private Yi, go inform Lord Cai of his visitor." the bearlike captain commanded his subordinate.
The soldier disappeared within the palace gates and almost immediately the sounds of swordplay ceased. Soon the man returned and nodded to his officer.
"If you'll dismount surrender any weapons you might have in your possession now, then we'll let you in to see the Prefect and make sure your rides are fed. Acceptable?" he said firmly but without malice. "Lord Cai is a cautious man."
Assuming that this was acceptable to Zhang and his companions, the gates were opened and the three visitors permitted to enter the courtyard beyond, where a cadre of troops were gathered behind the Prefect. Haoqi himself was bare to the waist, a sword in his belt and a thin film of sweat glistening on his body. Not even poor lighting could hide the fact that the nobleman was not in peek physical condition for his ribs were easily visible beneath his skin and there was an absence of any real muscle bulk in his scrawny arms as well.
"I must confess I'd rather be in my study with a book in hand or with my wife, than be here enduring the ceaseless burning in my limbs that comes with sword practice. However, it is a necessary evil for so poor a swordsman as myself to put up with the endless drills and sparring, if I am to wield a blade in my own defense one day." he said jovially and regarded Zhang Xing with an unwavering gaze. After a while he added: "Sordid History, Master Zhang? You make it sound as though we stole through the night and commited all manner of misdemeanours together. Try not to put wayward ideas into the heads of my soldiers in future."
The Prefect waved to Zhang to follow on as he headed across the courtyard, through the gardens and into the palace, his instructors never far behind. In the main audience chamber, a picture of Lu's faded glory, Cai took his seat on the dais and accepted a cup of wine from a servant, who also brought the visitors some refreshment.
"How fairs Guiyang then? I hear there is a certain Lin Xin has become powerful in those parts." he asked and then drank gratefully of his cup.

Ying followed the guard admiring the gardens who actually found them appealing. Not to fall behind she increased her pace a little to keep up with the guard. After being address she gave a bow and sat down.Wokimo wrote:@Sikozu

"Yes I did read it and found myself traveling this way so I thought I would take a look. First this is an impressive city and I see a lot of progress is taking place. Also I have heard about the attempt on your life and I'm glad to see you are okay, otherwise it wouldn't have made for much of a visit."
She took a sip of wine and rolled the glass around in her hand a little.
"You said you were looking for wise and virtuous people to follow you? How about those not so wise and maybe just a little virtuous. I've never really thought of myself as a scholar or great leader of men, just a woman wondering China looking to get herself into some trouble from time to time with no real purpose."

"I confess I had been looking for those with the wisdom and foresight to help me remain on the path of riteousness and to teach me in the Way. However, I am a practical man, Lin Ying, and I do not turn away the help of those who offer it with good intentions." he replied. "However, i must know what talents you have, other than a nack for finding trouble wherever you may be? It would be foolish of me to accept the services of one who's only purpose in life is to cause mahem. Sometimes, even those kingdoms that cannot be conquered by swords and arrows, can be torn assunder by a beautiful and tempestuous woman."
The Prefect seemed greatly pleased by his visitor's remarks regarding the state of the city, the chief concern of his for the past month at least. There was still overcrowding in Qufu and it wouldn't be solved overnight, but steps were being taken to keep a lid on any discontent caused by the cramped conditions and Haoqi had Ni Zan to thank for that. The Prefect was busy much of the time with overseeing the construction of a new quarry that would give him the materials to undertake his planned building project, so it fell to Master Ni to keep things in order within the city limits.
