Zhudi wrote:Sha listened carefully as the Ouhuan made his last remarks. He thought for a moment before continuing, "Such an event is very unfortunate... As neighbors, we would gladly help you in making sure that such occurrences will never happen again. You predecessor, Sima Shing, was notorious for performing impulsive and irrational acts; it is not a far stretch of the imagination that he would allow the construction of unsafe buildings in the name of expediency. I am sure that the Marquis would be willing to offer financial assistance in helping your Ouhuan bring these structures back up to code." He took out a sheet of paper and wrote down a figure. Handing it to an assistant , he waited silently as the note was taken up to Bai Zhan to read.
The secret note wrote: I am familiar with the incident that you have spoken of. The government of Changsha apologizes profusely that this disaster has occurred to your men. I hope that this following compensation is sufficient to convey our regrets on this incident. I assure you that if such an incident happens again in the future, it will not be by the hands of the men of Duke Lin Xin or Marquis Daisuke Aramaki.

A figure is scrawled at the bottom of the page...

365 gold (OOC: 1 gold for every 4 soldiers killed)
Bai Zhan scans the note briefly, meeting the minister's eyes and nodding. "This should do nicely, and it speaks well of you and your Lord to be concerned about the safety of my people."

"Was there aught else you would discuss?"

Sha bowed and said, "No there is nothing else. If my merchant caravan could be granted access to the city market place now, I would be very appreciative. We would like to establish some trade contacts here before we return to Changsha."

If and when that happens, the minister would ask for permission to leave. If that is granted, Sha would go back to his caravan and retrieve the 365 gold and return to the palace, giving it to one of the attending ministers.

A young man emerged from the southern hill country into Linjiang, seeking the Unifier. Obtaining directions to Jiangling from men not unlike himself, he sought out the hall of audience there and presented himself to the guards.

"I am Vahn Trung Huu, come to aid the one called the Unifier, let me pass!"

Being expected, Vahn Trung Huu was admitted with a minimum of protocol. After a short, private interview with Bai Zhan, he was accepted into the ranks.

Vahn Trung Huu has joined up! Post in O... Uh, dang you are quick.[/b]

An underweight steed of meager height, such that it could not see eye to eye with other adult horses grazed peacefully for a few moments. It's soft brown hair did not so much as glimmer in the sunlight nor flatter it's stature, but simply sat eschew of it's frame. After a few contemplative seconds it was reared by it's owner and directed towards the front gates of Jiangling. It trotted heavily, as if strained by some great weight. Hesitantly, it slowed under instruction to a stop. It's rider dismounted and saluted the guards. He slowly reached to a bag fastened to the saddle of his steed and retrieved it, offering it to the guards as he approached. A small monkey claw lay nestled within, although Lü's hands were certain to hold the bag in such way that the claw itself would not touch his hands as he grasped the edges to make it visible to his hosts.

"I have arrived with the intent of meeting your Lord. We have exchanged pleasantries and he requested that I greet him at my earliest convenience. Please see this as proof that it is so." Lü Shan spoke with a rasping tint to each word, punctuated with sharp intakes of air.

The man is appraised and largely dismissed by the two large Ouhuan guards even as he speaks. The contents of the bag are noted, and with a curt nod and a grunt the door to Bai Zhan's audience hall is opened.

In contrast to the rest of the administrative compound, this hall still reflects a mostly-chinese court flavor. The only nod to it's barbarian occupation is the rather gaudy mantle worn by Bai Zhan, and the presence of the shaman Bahn Tu, who had fast become Zhan's most trusted advisor.

The young man dips his head in an approximation of a curt bow in acknowledgement of the visitor. "You would be Lu Shan?(ooc: apologies for lack of umlaut). I must admit that your letter intruged me. It has been seldom that I have found men willing, let alone eager to work with the Ouhuan. "

(OOC: No worries, I don't expect to see myself doing the umlaut every post, it's a bit of a hassle.)

Lu bowed deeply and saluted his hosts. "You are correct, good sir. I am of the humble Lu household, a collection of people who have done no great service to any government they have served. They are collectors of meager office positions and men of little worth in comparison to the officers under your command. However, I still wished to present myself to you."

He paused for a moment, and sighed. "It is true, I did not expect to hear a myriad of talents begging a meeting with the Lord. However, it does not worry me his lineage nor 'barbarian' claims from some of the less knowledgeable people claiming their own power. Men who should dismiss such a talent surely look only to protect their own family's status and rank, not caring for what is truly best for our land.

With the subjugation of the Linjiang province, the Ouhuan should rightly be declared a King for all in the land to rejoice, acknowledged by the government for his deeds. It is regrettable that people should ignore such worth to preserve their own petty goals." He spoke quietly, with a calm demeanor. Before continuing, he made an abrasive noise from the back of his throat and coughed. "I myself possess no great talent for winning the hearts of men, yet I am intelligent and able in most duties. I have studied the works on war, and pray that I may put my knowledge to even the most basic use as organizing the guard of a town. I should also like to learn more of domestics, yet I fear my talents will go to waste if I do not seek out a man of talent to guide my course."

He bowed again, and nodded slowly to himself. "It is why I felt so keen to greet the Ouhuan. He has a reputation for being an able leader of men, and I should selfishly wish to prosper under his guidance only to repay him with any service he may wish of me."

The young ruler nods gravely. "You, Lu Shan, seem to possess many of the qualities that I value. Ambition, self-awareness, and an open mind. I, too, one day hope to study arts 'domestic', that have application beyond the current state of the middle kingdom, but I fear that it will be long before any of us have that time to spare. "

Zhan stands and begins to pace, restless in the chair as he is still relatively new to his role. "Unfortunately, your skill and knowledge in making war would be the skills most useful to the Ouhuan at this time. Most of us are learning as we progress. I myself was a mere administrator in the heirarchy of Yong but a few months ago, and before that a scandalous wastrel of a young man, with little filial piety. It seems that at these times Heaven blesses some men to be more than they are.

Bai Zhan pauses in his pacing. "We have a strong field commander, but lack the trained, strategic mind of one who could organize and lead those responsible for supply and some of the less... Martial... Tactics that can be effective in battle. Did your studies lead in such directions?"

"My studies ensured that I am well versed in the classics, as such I have some trifling knowledge of strategy and tactical theorems, yet have not been tested in a suitable condition to conclude a reasonable evaluation of my abilities in such roles. I feel confident that if given the chance, I should quickly pick up any techniques others may use and I pride myself as a quick learner. As such, I am sure I could fulfill such a role for you if that is what's required.

Personally, I may suggest a role such as this fitting for myself. I have no great martial training and yet I feel my contributions could be great if properly utilized." Lu glanced around quickly, taking in his surroundings. "I wish only to help propel the Lord to greater heights."

Bai Zhan smiles. "Welcome to the ranks of the Ouhuan then. I hope you've had your fill of sleep and ease up to now, because you're not likely to see much of either soon."
