Li Peng's Audience Hall - Yangdi

Some of the nearby guards began looking into the room at the sound of the girl's cries. Li Peng didn't know what to make of her story, but he didn't want to cause a scene lest rumors would spread. He held up his hands in an attempt to calm her down.

"Ah, uh, I think it might be coming back to me now... But this is not the best place to talk. Why don't we speak somewhere more private? I can show you to a room where you can stay for a while."

Her body relaxed as he seemed to recall, even if he wasn't quite at the point of accepting her up into his life. An eager bob of a nod as she moved to follow him, looking over her shoulder at the guard. "Oh, r-right... I guess this could be kind of awkward besides just with us."

She cleared her throat, lowering her voice a bit. "A-anyway, it... so... you do remember a little? She got in some trouble and so..."

Off into the Internal RP they went!

A handsome man rode to Yangdi and, after asking directions, made his way to the government building. He approached a guard and, after pulling a scroll from his robes, said, "I am Chen Ping and I have been invited here by your ruler."

The chief guard nodded at the man, saying "Yes, Prefect Li has been expecting you, Master Chen. If you will consent to a search first, we will lead you inside to meet him."

Assuming Chen Ping does not object, he is searched and then led inside the hall to a large audience chamber where Li Peng is waiting. Peng bows at the arrival of his guest. "Ah, Master Chen Ping, you came. I am glad to see you showed some interest in my letter. Tell me, how are things in Wei, that you would decide to leave Zhao Yue's service?"

Chen Ping bowed when he was led into the Prefect's audience chamber. He said, "My former master did not make use of my skills. Perhaps it is immodest of me but I do wish to be made use of - I do not wish to be wasted." In fact, while it did bother Chen Ping that he had not been given any work by Zhao Yue, he was more concerned with how this would most likely prevent him from gaining new ranks or power.

Peng sighed at his guest's response. "It is an all too common mistake for a lord to overlook the talent he has right at his disposal. But I am not one to make the same error. In Sai, I gathered many men of talent in Yueyang, and they have loyally followed me here to Hann after the attack of Meng Tian because they knew I saw their potential. Since I have come here, I have added more officers to my ranks; and I hope that you, Master Chen, shall also align yourself with me."

He paused for a moment, looking over Chen Ping, before continuing. "It would not do for you to serve a man and not know about him. What questions do you have for me?"

Chen Ping appreciated the opportunity to question such a powerful man without concerning himself, overmuch, with potential offense. After a moment he said, "Who are your allies and who are your enemies? And, if I may ask, what is your goal?"

These questions, Chen Ping thought, would tell him nearly all he needed to know of a man.

"My goal is to unite the land under one flag, as the Qin have done, by my leadership and by the assistance of my officers," said Peng. "To that end, I am currently a vassal of the Second Emperor, and the forces of the Mengs to the west and their opportunist cultist allies have aligned against me. With my neighbors to the east, the Chu rebels, I have no particular policy at the moment. Perhaps you yourself could establish contacts with them for me?" His face turned up into a smile at this suggestion.

"I don't know what kind of man Zhao Yue is, but I am one of ambition. I began my career with nothing but a small village in Sai and a handful of men. Yet I managed to become the leader of Yueyang, and now, though I have lost Yueyang, I control Hann. Who knows what the future will bring for me next? But whatever it is, I want a man like you at my side to see it."

Chen Ping was impressed with Li Peng's story. He wondered at the man losing a city and then gaining another immediately. He disliked the Qin having never acheived any recognition from them. Li Peng's situation seemed very difficult. He said, "You are in a hard postition though I am not afraid of a challenge myself. I am curious in what capacity you would wish me to serve?"

He thought he could definitely be of use to Li Peng but was unsure whether Li Peng could offer him the sort of power he wished for.

Li Peng rubbed his chin in thought, pondering a proper response.

"Were you militarily inclined, I could appoint you as General. But I don't know if the battlefield is the place you seek to prove yourself. On the other hand..."

He took another look at Chen Ping's face, trying to figure out his true intentions.

"If you would prefer to help me govern, as I suspect you do, I am prepared to appoint you Magistrate of Yingchuan. There is quite a lot of power in that rank, and Yingchuan is not on the front lines of the Qin battles to the west. Surely you could prosper with such a position?" Peng waited to see how Chen Ping would respond to what he thought was a rather generous offer.
