A rider bearing a white flag is sent forth from the lines of Zu Yanghei's army towards the approaching army from Chu. As he neared, he called out to the men of Chu, "Hail, men of Chu, I am here on behalf of the Supreme Commander of Sai to speak to the Duke of Chu, may I be allowed to speak with him?"

[Li Dao Wen]

A heavily-armed contingent of men, numbering about twenty in all, came out of the camp to meet the messenger. Behind their ranks came out a man more massive than any the messenger could have possibly seen before.

"You will be taken to the Duke's tent now, envoy of Sai," spoke the giant man in elaborate black armor, his eyes boring into the envoy. Immediately the twenty guards surrounded him and escorted him to the Duke of Chu's command post. Ma Dieu was present in the room, along with his entire command chain, discussing strategic matters over a huge map of Baocen Peng's domains. They were obviously out to conquer everything the King of Nanyang held, with brute force, if necessary.

The armor dissolved around the envoy, leaving him with a clear view of the Duke and his retainers, all the while remaining in the shadow of the champion of Chu. "Speak your piece, envoy. The Duke is listening."

[Brother Dun]

The envoy nodded, "Very well, my lord is curious as to why the Duke of Chu has invaded Baocen Peng? Obviously, the intent is to conquer, judging from my current surroundings... But there seems to be little reason in doing so... Furthermore, perhaps an accord could be reached between the Duke and my lord? The King of Nanyang has constantly been a threat to my liege, and as such, we have moved against his domain... While I am certain, judging from the look of things here, the armies of Chu shall not withdraw... However, perhaps an accord could be reached, and the armies of Sai and Chu could work together, and the lands of Nanyang split between our two lords?"

[Phailak]

Lai looked up, seemingly amused.

"Baocen Peng cast his fate with Xiang Yu, his lands are being seized in order to ensure the fallen King of Chu is not given authority over them since the Butcher is still in hiding. It is true we are not going to withdraw, but we also do not see any reason to allocate any of the lands to the Lord of Sai, we will not need his help to seize the land and there is no friendship between our clans that I know of. Unless you are saying you are willing to dispute our claim with your armies? That would be unwise and I would be surprised should your Lord decide to test his men against the veterans of Chu. Unless perhaps you are also offering something else in exchange for being granted Nanyang?"

Lai looked at the map once more.

"Brother the city of Zhu should go to Shen Feng, he administers his lands well. Unifying Jiujiang has been long overdue and is a trivial matter which would leave Nanyang up for discussion and was really the only true gain for moving the army out of Chu. I still feel it is a very strategic location for us to have influence over, but the decision is yours."

[Brother Dun]

The envoy raised a brow at the words of Fei Lai, "Quite surprising that you would spit in the face of an offer of friendship, and hope for conflict... And yet you also managed to insult the armies of my lord, over one hundred and thirty thousands, veterans of all the Western wars. They have been tested, and proven, upon the fields of battle. It is also interesting that you would desire to throw away as many lives of your own men as possible, when a joint effort between my lord and the Duke would utterly crush the armies of Baocen Peng quite easily... I would hope that the Duke is more caring about the lives of his men than are you."

[Phailak]

Lai shrugged.

"You misunderstand me. Your Lord will not fight and so no lives will be lost and no compromise is needed. I can appreciate friendship only when it is offered without a request for payment. Had you made this same offer before our armies would of marched, it would of been much more agreeable and many resources saved. To merge with you now would mean we have to send men back home, supplies, time wasted and the end result being having only secured Jiujiang. As I have said, I only offer my advice to my brother bluntly as we have always done between us. You are privy to the exchange, if you take offense from it, it was not my intention."

[Mardagg]

Ma Dieu nod in respect to Prefect Xian when he enter and listen attentively to the messenger's request... ''Thank you brother for your advice: like you said I don't see why we should split land when we are unsure where the allegiance of your King lies. I have heard that your Commander in Chief is spreading rumours on my person and from what I can see he hold a grudge against me since the defeat I gave him in Xuyi. All he did at the council was to try to stain my name and he did it with the aid of your representative and the one of Wu...'' you could see deception in the Duke eye.

''I have no trust in your lord and he gave me no reason to have any. I just receive a letter of reinforcement from King Sheng Feng who is under attack by the know comfirm rebel in Wu. I can easily conclude that your army is working with Wu to attack the south...''

''We both know that Sheng Feng swore to protect the new Emperor and I will offer him the city of Zhu because I know on witch side he is. If you prove your loyalty and raise your army against a known rebel you will have my full support in attack and defence and I will plead in your favor to the new Emperor to give you full right over Nanyang. Until then I will ask you to withdraw your troops into Hann: no man loyal to the Emperor will die today. I will claim the land in the name of Emperor Kang of Chu and inform him of your intention to rule the land of Nanyang.''

[Brother Dun]

The envoy nodded his head, "This lack of trust will no doubt sadden my liege, but I certainly understand where you are coming from. However, allow me to say this about the Supreme Commander, he is a brash man, and word of his exploits did reach back to my liege... You are correct in thinking he holds a grudge against you, as he does... But I cannot say if it is for the defeat at Xuyi, most likely for the bitter war fought between your lordship and he while he was in the service of Wu. And as for the words of our envoy at Chen, yes, they were harsh, Duke Ma, however... Xing Cai is an excellent judge of character, and to say the least, your lordship did do much to impress him, in still allowing him to speak freely. As your vassal stated before, we have not had relations in the past, and so, going into the conference we were unsure of your own qualities. That you did not kill Xing Cai, nor anyone else at the Conference for speaking against you, reflects quite well upon your lordship. As for working in concert with Wu, that is a false assertion. My lord merely sought to depose King Baocen Peng for his repeated attacks against the King of Qin, Liu Bang, and my own lord, and his lack of a showing at the Conference of Chen. If you wish to know where my lord's loyalties lie, they are to the King of Qin, for my lord is his vassal. And the King of Qin has been nothing but loyal to the Emperor... And do not worry about the Supreme Commander, the Lord-Scholar shall keep the man in check..."

Pausing a moment and looking around, the Envoy bowed once, "As I can see there is nothing else to discuss here, may I have my leave to return to my lordship's army?"

Assuming he is given permission, the envoy leaves to report his findings...
