There are a few people that fit the bill, although they're not cookie cutter heroes like Aragorn. Jaime is starting to act like he wants to be one. It'll be interesting to see how that turns out.

I'm very fond of anything by Haruki Murakami. It's really difficult to name a single favorite, but I'd settle for picking "A Wild Sheep Chase." It's sort of a surreal detective story about a very peculiar sheep—very strange, but really stylishly done.

At the moment I've been reading Sansom's "History of Japan" volumes while studying up on reading material for my future classes. I've also grown fond of some mysteries I've found by I.J. Parker–has anyone heard of her?

I haven't read that but liked the Wind Up Bird Chronicle and have Kafka on the Shore in a big pile of 'to be read'.

The Wind Up Bird was a pretty impressive read, but Kafka is probably just as good if not better. The big ol' Murakami novel has the advantage of a more mature narrator, but Kafka's got a little more of the "weird" adventuring going for it. Anyways, I'm always pleased to find someone who's read Murakami. His books sell, but I rarely meet someone who's opened one of them up!

I've heard "The Wheel of Time" mentioned a lot. What's it about?

It isn't quite possible to sum up 11 (to be 12) novels (600-1100 pages each). If you like fantasy, don't mind reading that many books, even if there are about 400 pages scattered throughout that are not exactly important to the story, then you will like it. If you don't like the length, or don't like books that aren't action packed, then stay away.

The "Darkness" series by Harry Turtledove is, thus far, my favourite.

World War II-esque conflict with dragons. What's not to love?
