Re: The child with no tears left

The plan took root and the last three heroes took position. Timing was everything for Shen Feng and Song Xi.

As Song Xi cut the horses free, he waited for Shen Feng's signal to spook them. As he heard his companion's battlecry, he slapped a few of them and they bolted, all of them.

Shen Feng landed on the enemies with confidence and efficiency, dispatching five of them with ease. As they tried to organize, Feng noticed the boy in the corner, seemingly afraid but not crying. Both his parents stood before him ready to fight if need be but they did not engage, just waited.

Feng's heroics were short lived, there were still a lot of men left standing so he started falling back. Song Xi already had left to the appointed place but he was followed by six of the men who cut him off. They pursued him for what seemed a long time, eventually he made his way back to the village, lost to the other two. (Song Xi out).

Liu Jian waited patiently as he saw men chasing Shen Feng. Once he saw them past, he launched himself at their rear. Unprepared for any sort of attack, Jian cut down another 8 men. 5 were left standing.

Those 5 retreated back to their small camp with the parents and child. Jian and Feng followed and were shocked to see the parents and child still there... waiting? The men did not seem ready to stand down despite what they just witnessed. Song Xi was nowhere to be found. The father seemed to have a knife in his hand, slightly hidden.

Last Phase of the quest

You are facing 5 armed men. Behind them is the father, knife in hand. Behind him the mother and finally the child. The mother is not comforting the child who seems afraid but isn't crying. Though she is in front of the kid, she doesn't seem to adopt a protective stance, something is off.

Two ways to approach this. If you think the father is on your side, you can attack normally the five men. If you think he is against you, you attack from another formation. I confided the father's true intentions to Titania on Discord so you don't feel there's any funny business. If you choose wrongly, one of you randomly gets taken out, reducing chances of a successful quest finish. Let me know which side you think the father is on, you both have to agree on this, if you don't I'll roll randomly your decision as a duo.

"Keep an eye on the 'parents'. I've got my doubts about this. They could've broken and fled during that fighting to get to safety but they didn't. Nor are they being used as hostages to threaten us." Feng whispered softly to Liu Jian, as they stared down the remaining men.

The brief conference done, he took a couple of steps forward, a dark grin on his dirty face. He'd been through more than his share of fights this night, and bore the wounds from them, but that didn't seem to be slowing him down, not now with the end in sight. He spoke again, this time for the thugs to hear, "Five against two, huh? I'll take those odds any day."

Shen Feng shall attack from another formation, not trusting the father!

Liu Jian mumbled right back over to Shen Feng.

"Trust me broski, I was already feelin' those vibes. You strike from the side, I'll come up the middle. I'm used to scrappin', so if I see a spot or dad goes knifey-time, I'll hammer it out of his hands. Just watch my back like I'll watch yours, and numero uno? No one hurts my new little bro over there." As he and Shen Feng being to move slightly away from each other to get in position, Liu Jian waited and synced his strike to go alongside Shen Feng charging forward, trying to get more than one of these guys using his big hammer swing arc, but also keeping an eye on the "dad" and being ready to strike him as needed.

What he said! These dads ain't loyal! Can't trust these dudes out in these streets!

The five men seemed resolute, holding their ground. Liu Jian quickly dispatched the first one, opening a flank attack for Shen Feng who got another. Jian took a nasty overhead blow but he shook it off, countering with a low swipe of his hammer, shattering the man's knee. Shen Feng dodged a side attack that was more meant to push him back as the remaining two jumped Jian.

Feng had an opening to attack their rears but he hesitated, knowing it might mean a knife in his back.

Jian went down with a blade stuck in his neck. Shen Feng watched the father one last time before figuring he'd take his chances. Striking the one without a blade first he then sidestepped the final attack and countered by skewering the last man standing. He felt more than saw the father coming at him but Jian, fighting to remain conscious, threw his hammer at the man, disarming him.

He cowered back with the woman, the child behind them.

Feng turned back to Jian who was calling out to the boy, blood spilling from his mouth. Upon a closer look, the blade was buried in the clavicle, pretty deep but he would live.

It was difficult getting Jian, the parents and the child back but Feng managed, finding some of the horses along the way. Some of the men that fought by his side formed a protective escort for them as well as they approached the village. It was under the rule of someone they did not trust so they traveled to another nearby with a healer. While they tended to Jian, Feng interrogated the "parents", finding out that the child is unfortunately their child, they were using him as bait. The father used to be a Han official at court and he was paid and supported by an old contact of his that orchestrated the whole thing, he is unsure why. He believes it was to actually distract some of the men of the surroundings from their duties or something to that effect. The man's name was Li Zhao, however this man was not the mastermind behind the whole thing. That man was to arrive in these parts within a few weeks and this was part of his plans.

Feng had a hard time believing all this but could not make anymore headway. In his searches, he did uncover some important documents which he sent to the right folks and was handsomely rewarded.
