Bao Bao's Emporium

Nestled in the northern town of Guangping lies Bao Bao's Emporium. Its main room contains a collection of fine cups and other goods for sale. Behind the shop is a beautiful courtyard garden, filled with flowers that bloom in the spring and trees that turn vibrant red and yellow in the autumn. When the weather is fair, seats are placed out for customers to enjoy the atmosphere. Farther back is a small pond with a romantic viewing gazebo.

The emporium is run by a man named Bao Bao. Locals describe him as a wealthy foreigner, charming though slightly eccentric. He is open to visitors and will kindly converse or help advise. On the streetside entrance, a sign is posted describing the establishment:

Lai's carriage and extensive entourage arrived at the agreed location shortly after noon. He was to be there early morning and had kept that promise since this was as early as his beauty sleep allowed him to travel and arrive anywhere. Truth be told, he had arrived last night and camped luxuriously on the outskirts, he had woken up around 10 and took two hours to ready himself.

Since this was to be a military meeting, he wore his silver breastplate with gold and all manner of jewelry as well as his inherited family sword at his waist.

He strutted within the compound with an air of authority and pride, expected to be led to his host without delay. There were pretty women all around him as well as impressive looking bodyguards, ten in total. One of the women, the one that could potentially be qualified as not as pretty, stepped up.

"Lord Fei of Jiangxia is expected, please escort us to meet the master of this... place."

Sighing, Lai looked around in disbelief that his entourage had come to a stop.

A man bowed and promptly responded to the call. He was well-mannered, and even more well-dressed, showing signs of both martial and mental prowess.

"Welcome, Lord Fei. I am Xiong Liyiao, lieutenant to Master Bao. Please, follow me to the ceremony room."

A trio of servants appeared, and together with Xiong, they guided behind the entrance room and shop. They passed through the courtyard, where the trees were now bare of leaves and the pond nearly frozen. Though missing its true beauty, the site remained calm and peaceful. The air was crisp, and Xiong appreciated a gentle inhale before leading the guests inside the hall.

There, a fine table and seats were neatly arranged for the guest and his entourage. Xiong motioned to the servants to fetch hot tea and delicate refreshments. Bao Bao stood beside the table, and upon seeing the visitors, his face elated, and he bowed profusely.

"Lord Fei! Welcome welcome! Please have a seat!"

He tried his best to remain civil, though began to slip toward his usual loud and gregarious nature.

"Thanks a ton for coming here, Lord Fei. I hope your journey wasn't too rough, I know snow spooks the mainlanders...Ah, I see Xiong has brought you tea to warm the body. Perhaps some wine to warm the spirits bahaha?"

Lai followed, perfect posture and maintained his air of superiority.

He ignored all surroundings, simply marched forward making sure no mud or debris stained his armored boots.

When he met his host, his eyebrow went up in amusement. He refused tea and wine and simply smiled, like a parent would smile at a child.

"Master Bao."

He took a moment to look around.

"I do not... presume to know much about war..."

Here he paused for effect, showing he thought he knew all there was about war, he did not even attempt to hide the fake humbleness.

"This does not look like a military camp, do you have an army or just a pretty place to make trinkets?"

After a pause, he added.

"No offense, of course."

"Hahah, none taken, Lord Fei! I'm also glad you think my emporium looks nice, kudos to Xiong!"

Bao bowed to his guest, and pointed toward lieutenant, who also happened to be in charge of landscaping. He took a sip of wine, then continued.

"And we do have an army! You see, Guangping was left to us kind of in a bad spot. Our guys are helping clean up the streets and rebuild the roads. But, when needed, they'll be ready to fight! They're well-trained and good at stabbing things, though I probably wouldn't want them near my fine cups and teasets!"

Bao laughed anxiously, unsure if he was insulting or impressing the visitor. Either way, he continued.

"And don't worry about our officers, Lord Fei! We got a few who can lead us to victory:

Starting with me, I am Bao Bao, strong warrior and commander, victor of multiple duels and freer of Guangping.

Lieutenant Xiong over there is our head strategist. He's also a good juggler! Why, one time at the start of a battle, he juggled over EIGHT balls at once. Hundreds of enemies were so startled that they fled in confusion at the sight, getting us victory!

Captain Li is...not here, but he is a veteran of many wars. Never lost a battle yet!

And the others, they're not as strong or smart as us, but they're at least brave!"

Bao Bao gave a Bao bow, waiting for a response.

Lai seemed to get bored as the list went by, shaking his head at the end before speaking.

"Yes, well, good. So, I have taken the liberty of writing down the tributes I expect from you. This is not negotiable and will be delivered to my offices."

He slid the paper across to his host.

"If there is nothing else, my presence is required at some important event far... FAR away from here and I must make haste!"
