Song Xi had personally left his new palace in Liaodong for the defense of Changli. It was a bit of a surprise to hear that his ally was moving against him, though it made sense for the times, seeing as what Meng Jun had done further west. Deep down he did not wish to fight against the older magistrate, but he would do what he must. He wouldn't rush to fighting though due to their past relations. In his command building in Changli Xi wrote a letter to be delivered to Shaozu...

Pan Shaozu's army marched on Changli. A letter arrived from his old friend Song Xi. The situation was precarious. Betray his friend or risk his son's life. The orders to march on Changli surprised the aging commander. Pan Ai expressed concern. Changli would be most likely to be defended, not only for the betrayal but for the strategic value that the village held connecting Song Xi's other holdings. Communication with Meng Jun on the concern was largely met with deaf ears and it seemed that Meng Jun may have orchestrated this to cripple our forces. Making us the sacrificial lamb drawing most of Song Xi's defense to allow his other ally to take Xuantu unchallenged. It was a smart move.

"Ai"

"Yes father?"

"I will be ordering a withdraw."

"And what of Pan Tong?"

Ai knew this was a possibility, but that did not stop the concern on his face.

"Go and get word to him. He knew the risks, and ultimately his willingness to remain saved his sister's life. You are his best hope to try and escape before Meng Jun discovers the betrayal."

Ai gave his father a long look and let out a sigh. "May the Heavens guide me."

Shaozu embraced his son. "This is for the best of the family. Tong understands that. Be careful Ai."

Shaozu ordered the retreat and made his way to meet with Song Xi.
