The man was awfully nosey. Wei didn't seem to mind. Li ning was an old man, and likely entitled to be a bit nosey. Quietly he wondered if the man wasn't here partially to get information for Xia Xi.

Chen Wei: She is indeed a remarkable girl. And I intend to meet with Lord Xia soon. You have some insight perhaps? As for your time here in Nanyang, that is how I know of you. The documents kept here in Huyang are somewhat vague, but they are well organized. I doubt my predecessor ever bothered to move them.

Chen Wei called for wine, and it was brought. Some was proferred to his guest, while he sipped lightly at his own. Setting it down, Chen Wei tried to steer the conversation back towards business.

Chen Wei: They say that many great men of the realm have learned from your writings. I am eager to as well. I do hope you will allow it.

Some time after the recent battle on the fields of Huyang, a small convoy of men marched to Chen Wei's city on a diplomatic mission. Upon arriving at the exterior of the city, Cheng Ou and a few escorts walked to the audience hall, and arriving at the gates, they announced themselves.

"I am Cheng Ou, an officer of Prefect Li of Hann. We are here to establish better relations between my Lord's force and Governor Chen's force. We will consent to any searches."

"Many lesser men benefit as well. But that is not your point, I take it." Li Ning was still unsure about the man, but he needed to be careful. If he was indeed planning to visit Xia Xi, and if he was a favorite of Xia Liangyu, then he needed to choose his words carefully. "As for your request, I could manage, but what you ask for is not easy. I will require no less than 1500 gold taels. I shall take it now, if you accept my offer, and you may retrieve your book when you call on my lord. Is that acceptable?"

Ning drank the wine he was offered, and made an approving face. He did prefer the vintages from his homeland the best.

The guards ushered the envoy inside without a search. Chen Wei was more than capable of handling most diplomats, if there was danger, and if not, there were plenty of guards about. As they arrived in the chamber of petitions, Chen Wei was looking bored as usual. When the visitors were announced, he looked at them carefully.

Chen Wei: Welcome, Cheng Ou. How can I be of service to Prefect Li?

Chen Wei's eyes lit up at the number, but he quickly composed himself. He motioned to a servant who departed the room.

Chen Wei: Your funds, along with a proper excort back to Yin, will be provided. Is there anything else you require, Master Li?

((1500 gold to Li Ning from this KT.))

"Only time," replied the old man. "I look forward to seeing you when you come to Zhaoge. Perhaps, you will bring more of the local wine as a gift?" Ning held up the glass approvingly, and then set it down. He bowed to the Lord of Huyang, and then departed the chamber to find his money and his escort.

The man bowed to the scholar as he departed. He was eager to have his new book, and was glad the meeting with Li Ning had gone so well. At least he thought it had gone well.

Chen Wei: I will do so. And I will make sure that your escort back has a couple of bottles with them. Travel well, Master Li.

Wei ordered his servants to make it so, and then left the room himself, eager to visit his training grounds.

The following month, after having toiled dilegently on his charge, the old scholar returned to Huyang, his longtime home, and realm of Magistrate Chen Wei. As he approached the gates, he nodded to the guards, and motioned to a leatherbound package under his arm. "I have a package for your master. I do not believe he is expecting me, but I missed our rendezvous in Yin. Please inform him that I have come with my apologies."

Saying nothing more, the old man straightened his robes and awaited his meeting with the Lord Chen.

((ummm...I hadn't been there yet?))

The guards declined to search the man, and asked him to follow them into the audience chamber. Li Ning was announced, and Chen Wei rose to meet him. He offered the old man a deep bow and then nodded his head.

Chen Wei: Indeed. I heard that you were marching with Li Zhu's armies. I hope that all went well in that endeavor. I assume that is my commissioned work?

Wei motioned to the package under the old man's arm but made no advances towards it.

"You would be correct, Lord Chen. And my recent time in the north has served its purpose. No more and no less. I trust you are well, yourself?" The old scholar didn't actually sound like he was interested in the conversation, so much as he was being polite.

He handed the book to a servant who gave it to Chen Wei. "I have no doubts that you will find the book to your liking. However, if there are any problems, you'll be sure to let me know?"

Wei took the book but didn't bother to open it. Instead, he gave the scholar a deep bow, and then smiled triumphantly.

Chen Wei: No, I don't think there will be any issue. I am eager to study your teachings however. The Lady Xia informs me that your instruction has done wonders for her, and that makes me extremely anxious.

He called for his servants, who had a case of wine brought out for the old scholar, and motioned for some guards to carry it to his carriage.

Chen Wei: Your bonus, as agreed upon. Perhaps we can do more business in the future?
