If someone replaces Lord Xiong at the head of two important cities in Changshan, do you honestly believe there is no danger? You are taking my words out of context, it was to imply my Lord will not attack his former mentor, Master Jin, but it does not mean others won't if Lord Xiong doesn't return. If the Marquis in Yan should disappear tomorrow and someone else unknown to your Lord step forth to claim Yan, you will not step in, more specifically in Zhou Guo? You belittle me for threats that you admit are veiled and concealed and thus dependant on your perception of my words, yet you keep threatening us with violence. Your Lord has helped King Xia in the south without hesitating for a lot less than a city in return I am certain, yet you refuse a similar request to your ally that has done nothing but support you in Changshan."

Huan sighs.

"If Master Jin and Master Xian permits, I will return home as all hope of any civil arrangement is now lost. As I see it now, we requested support, it was refused. Seeing as Master Jin here does not really have the authority, I will not present the offer for the support in exchance for Zhou Guo. If Lord Xiong returns, you may inform him of the offer and see what he says, if not, we will attempt to adjust our plans without your support since time is a factor here. Is this agreeable to both of you?"

The envoy shifted around slightly, then looked back at the guards. "Well?" he asked, louder than he probably should have. "Does your master desire to meet with me or not? The gold was only half of the deal."

Jin Dun tsked himself for letting the conversation get away from him. "Master Xian, Master Lin, there is no need for such animosity. Master Xian, this man simply has said what most know already, that my father and the Marquis have a history and it is that history that will most likely keep us safe when Marquis Fei is informed of lord Xiong's disappearance. Also, the deal I proposed is one that I didn't expect he would like at the outset as control of a city in exchange for acting as a supply line does not seem like a fair exchange at first glance."

"Master Lin, you must remember that the Marquis has a history of mixing threats with treaties, if rumor is to be believed, and thus every word that proceeds from your mouth that could be construed as such most likely will be. My proposal is not nearly so bad as it sounds. Without our help, you most likely will not get the whole of Jibei within the month, which both deprives you of resources and gives them to your enemy Tian Dan. If you think about it this way, we are providing a city in Jibei for the city in Changshan, it will simply come from the King of Qi insted of the Prefect of Xiangguo. Now I don't expect you to respond to my proposal personally, as I know you don't have the authority for it, but you may present it to the Marquis as a counter proposal instead of the refusal you received from my father. Is that not a slightly more agreeable thought?"

The guard-captain spoke to the envoy. "The Lord Prefect is unavailable at this time. Would it be permissible to speak with Acting Administrator Jin instead?"

Huan nodded.

"Indeed, that is fair. I will make the proposal and see what how my Lord responds and perhaps our next meeting will be a more joyous one?"

His passion abated a bit, he bows to both men.

"I apologize for any threat or disrespect I may have caused here today."

He gave a bit of a weak smile, then said, "Yes, that is fine."

The guards led the envoy into the citadel, past the grand audience hall, and into the administrative wing. The group walked down somewhat cramped hallways to a door near the end. The door looked little different from the others that surrounded it. In front of this door they stopped and two guards took their positions, one on each side of the door. The guard-captain stepped through the door into the cramped room on the other side.

"Master Jin, there is an envoy from the King of Yin here."

Jin Kai was sitting at his small table covered in various documents. When the guard spoke he lifted his head from the mess. "Of course there is," he said irritatedly to himself. "Well send him in."

The guard stepped outside and bowed to the envoy. "You may enter, but there is not enough room for your escort. They may wait here or I can entertain them at a local teahouse, whichever you prefer."

When the envoy entered the small office, Jin Kai stood so that he coul exchange bows with him. "What can I do for you an your king today?"

"I do not need the escort," the envoy replied, and went in. After seeing the new man, he gave a small nod and said, "My initial purpose was to deliver the gold as payment for the Prefect's assistance in Zhao. However, along with this, it was supposed to be my honor to confer upon him the title of Marquis. This, not inside of the Kingdom of Yin, but as an ally of it. However, it seems like this is difficult to do."

He paused for a second and said, "May I ask who I am speaking to? I do not know how to address you, sir."

Jin Kai gave a slightly exasperated sigh at the envoy's words. I am Jin Kai, a recent addition to Prefect Xiong's forces, but I am working as the Acting Administrator of his territories in his absence. You see, the young Master seems to have gone missing. My son believes he has simply gone to do what young men do, but I have sent the guards out to find him anyway. It has been weeks, but I still hold out a slim hope to find him."

The envoy was shocked. "That is quite surprising," he said, looking down. "We had thought good things of his administration here. I do hope he returns, but I suppose only time will tell."

He thought for a moment, then said, "I believe, however, that my King desires to honor his agreement regardless. He will support whoever is determined as successor as a Marquis, and as he desired, is indebted to him to provide future military assistance as required. I believe he would like to know the situation in Changshan here better, though, so he would know how to assist you best."

"Indeed, Master Envoy, this is a most distressing situation. The Prefect was too young to have a suitable heir, an there are none in his ranks that seem to be ready or able to take up his position. Of the people who seem most able to take the reigns of this administration, General Zhang Kui has been very quiet since his march to aid your lord against Wu Chen, Colonel Xian Jue has shown no interest in the position, and I have only been an official member of this faction since January."
