Having finally mobilized his army to deal with the remnants of Xiang Jun's force, word came of the approaching Wu army from the east, an attack that he hadn't been expecting. Feng had been the one friendly ear to listen to Li Jiacheng, after all, when the rest of the neigboring lords were united against him. And now, an army marching on him? He called his men to a halt, prepared to turn back and defend. But first, he sent a messenger towards the army as it crossed the border, prepared to parley with them. This battle, hopefully, could be avoided. If not, then it would be time to send messengers to the other neighboring lords, to better rouse a force to oppose the incursion.

I'll be handling your battle. I realize you are waiting on a response from Wu, so I shall wait for now.

A messenger arrives from the grand army and look at the King of Linjiang.

"What do you offer my Lord to make him even consider falling back from his attack?"

The messenger was brought through to see the King, girded for battle as he was, with his guards resplendant. A trace of worry could be seen on his face, despite his efforts to conceal it. He knew that the invading force outsized his own army greatly, and he knew what would be necessary in order to stop it. "Your lord is currently feuding with Ma Dieu, is he not? An attack like this is simply going to drive me to his camp." The King of Linjiang had a severe look to his face as he continued. "I do not particularly want to be drawn into that fight, but you are going to leave me no choice."

He sighed softly as he regarded the messenger. "I am not going to beg and grovel before you. That would be demeaning, both to me and to your lord. But my lands have remained friendly with yours since these matters began. I was on good terms with Lord Li Jiacheng, and indeed, I was the only lord who refused to march on him when Ma Dieu organized resistance against him. Even now, I am marching my armies on the forces of Xiang Jun, a man who your land has feuded with in the past. I do not see how making another enemy serves either your lord's interests, or those of the empire as a whole. Your messenger claimed to be in favor of the new Emperor at the conference, did he not? Were those empty words, merely meant to cause distraction? I know that Fan Zeng will not rejoice if my forces are defeated. Perhaps your lord does not care what he thinks, I do not know."

"Maybe the actions of the past do not mean anything to your lord. He is not Li Jiacheng, after all. But if you insist on pushing this matter, on trying to seize my lands, then I intend to request help from the King of Han and from Ma Dieu to defend them. Your army will be facing more than it bargained for when Duke Han Xin arrives to assist Duke Zhang Han. And I am sure that Ma Dieu looks forward to being able to engage your armies in battle outside of his own lands. Especially when the battle drags on, and he is thus able to attack your own underdefended lands while I hold your forces here." He gave a wan smile, shaking his head. "This conflict does not benefit anyone save Ma Dieu. It grants him legitimacy, it positions him as the defender of Fan Zeng's fledgling empire. Do you think he could be convinced to leave Chu in the charge of the Emperor after something like this, as your lord requested at the conference?"

"If you withdraw your armies without a fight, I shall pursue no vendetta against you. Even if Ma Dieu requests me to strike, I will not. You have my word on that, and unlike many of the Kings of this land, my word means something. That is what I offer your lord. The only other thing I can offer is the knowledge that, if you press the attack, I will do everything I can on behalf of my people to protect them, even if that means turning to Ma Dieu and the King of Han. I honestly would not like to see that happen, but backed into a corner, I shall have no choice. Return to your lord and have him think on my words, have him consult with his strategists. I hope, for the sake of the empire and the people of the south, that he shall make the right choice."

The envoy looks at the man in such a way as to convey that he was not disdainful of the man's words.

"My lord does not forget the friendship between Linjiang and Wu yet he sees that he has little to no choice. Ma Dieu is already moving south and you would be without a doubt his next target after he crushes Baocen Peng. After all, why did the King of Nanyang not arrive in Chen? Because he was a prisoner of King Liu Bang in the far west when the invitations were sent out. Does Ma Dieu accept this totally acceptable reasoning? No. He once again uses this as an excuse to execute a campaign to attack one of his 'enemies'. You know as well as I that Ma Dieu is a man as driven as a mad dog, he will not stop for anything. Do you think you could stand for the month it will take my armies to come here to reinforce you if Ma Dieu attacks? His host is larger than mine and lead by almost solely those hard bitten mercenaries who have laid waste to nearly a third of the middle kingdom.

My King sent me ahead to present a possible solution to this. He wishes to extend to you his protection in a more direct manner. He will offer you title under him as the Duke of Linjiang with his promise that once Ma Dieu is destroyed he will restore you to your throne. In this way our forces can join together to combat the menace of Xiang Yu's Mad Dog. I assure you that is what he is King Shen, and creatures of that sort the only option is to put them down and quickly. What say you, will you join your hand with that of my King. Relinquish your title of King in the short term to aid in the elimination of the greatest threat to the land in recent times? Greater even than Xiang Yu in my opinion, as at least he was willing to fight his battle himself and not send others to take his place in single combat.

I hope that you can see the reasoning behind the decision of my King."

A messenger made haste to see King Shen Feng to discuss with him certain matters. He would deliver two letters, one for himself as well as one for the Men of Wu should King Shen Feng see fit to deliver the letter, being permitted to read it himself first.

The Tiger King of Linjiang stared blankly at the messenger for a time, before replying. "You want me to surrender my title of King to the armies that seek to invade my land, so that you can protect me from one who has not yet moved to invade my land, on the promise that later my title shall be restored to me?"

"Surrender is not an option. I will not surrender to you, nor will I surrender to Ma Dieu. With my Imperial sanction, I brought peace to these provinces and defeated the rebels that pillaged the lands. I rebuilt the towns that suffered depredations and have done what I can to ensure prosperity, even as the rest of the empire has torn itself apart. If I threw all of that away, just to save my life, what kind of man would I be? I would not be worthy to be called a dog, let alone a King."

Before he could dismiss the messenger, another man approached, this one announced as an envoy from Ma Dieu. Feng raised his hand to the Wu messenger, signalling him to wait, as he was brought two letters from Ma Dieu's hand. "Just a moment, this might be relevant." On reading the first letter, he pursed his lips, taking in what it contained and reading it over a second time, just to be sure.

"This is an... interesting compromise." Feng looked up from the letter, folding it and tucking it within his armor. "Though he is prepared to send reinforcements, Ma Dieu wishes to avoid this battle as well. And he wishes to extend an olive branch to your forces. He suggests that, if you pull back from your attack, I shall send to you tribute amounting to one thousand, five hundred gold pieces in the upcoming month. As well, he will match the amount himself. This is to be done as a show of faith and good will on our behalf. As I said in the council, there are external threats to the Emperor that must be dealt with, threats that are greater than whatever infighting we might have. With three thousand gold pieces to fund your armies, you shall be better able to combat these threats, and without having to worry about doing battle with you, so shall myself and Ma Dieu. As well, Ma Dieu will return to me the city of Zhu which I once controlled."

Mention of Zhu, his very first capital, made Feng pause slightly. The envoy had mentioned Baocen Peng, and that was indeed something he felt conflicted about. "While the King of Nanyang was held captive, I am unsure what has happened in his lands in the meantime. Attempts to speak with them have been rebuffed, and I know that the commander of his forces departed after we retreated from Han. While I would prefer to hear from Lord Baocen Peng myself, I know that Sai has marched on Nanyang as well as Ma Dieu. No request for aid has come to me, and it makes me wonder what will there is left among his forces to defend. I know that I do not relish the thought of Sai being on my borders, and nor should anyone loyal to the empire. Let us not forget how he murdered a neighboring lord in cold blood in his audience hall. If Nanyang is to fall to someone, I would rather it fall to Ma Dieu than Zu Yanghei."

Feng handed the second letter he received to one of his guards, who brought it to the messenger to read. "This is what Ma Dieu has penned to you. I urge you to consider the matter and withdraw your attack, in exchange for the offered tributes. There will be time to settle old feuds later, once the true rebels have been put down. Ideally, we will even be able to settle them without needing to drench the farmers' fields in blood."

The envoy simply sighs and shakes his head.

"Enjoy your time as a vassal of the Dog. We accept your offer and shall pity you when Ma Dieu's armies attack and burn your lands to the ground."
