The Raid on Huai'an, November 206 BC
The month of November brought great warfare to the Southlands, with countless raids on the lands of Jiujiang, Yue, and Huainan made by Marquis Ma Dieu and the Governors Baocen Peng and Ma Su. While the King of Wu, Li Jiacheng, had abandoned many of his holdings, including all of Jiujiang and Yue, due an illness, his Supreme Commander, Yi Guang, would not let the region of Huai'an fall to the Marquis' men. Taking with him the King's kinsman, the Duke Zongren, Yi Guang marshaled up a massive force of men, numbering over sixty-five thousand men. While it may have been considered excessive, given that the force attacking Huaiyin was a modest twenty thousand, it was clear that Yi Guang wished to send a message to the King's enemies: while the King of Wu may have taken ill in the autumn months, Huainan nor Wu would fall. And so late in the autumn of 206 BC, the hopes of the peasantry, prayers that the lands along the Huai river would see peace (and hence "Huai'an") were shattered. War had come.
Min Mao was hardly a remarkable man. Sure, he possessed some talent, some ability, especially when it came to recruitment, but many of his fellow officers outshone his deeds. Appointed the administrator of one of the King's military districts, he had overseen the conscription of many of the men that now served alongside him in this campaign. Not wishing to see his comrades die, he rode to the fore of Li Jiacheng's army. Courageously, he roared out against the men of the two Mas, exclaiming, "I am Min Mao, officer of the King of Wu! I challenge you, men of Chu! Who is bold enough to face me?!" Panting, adrenaline still surging through his body, Min Mao looked for a response, any reaction at all. Yet none of the Marquis' men nor those of Governor Ma Su came forward. Scoffing, Min Mao derided his foes, "Cowards! For this, your men shall pay the price!" Sweeping his spear out to point at the enemy, Min Mao then urged his horse back to his own lines. Though many of the men of Chu did not take the threat seriously, some began to waver (

Having not expected to be fighting such a large force, the Chief Aide to the Marquis, Kijo Akki, found herself utterly confused as to what to do. Should she retreat? She was outnumbered three to one. But then the Marquis would be quite wroth with her, as she pledged to take the region of Huai'an in his name, thereby unifying Huainan beneath his banner. Pouting over her indecision, she told the war council, "You all stay here! I'm going to go fight!" With an enthusiastic nod, the Kijo went off to do just that, leaving... someone in charge, just whom, her deputies were not entirely sure. All they knew was that it
couldn't have been Xiahou Dingwu, or so rumors spread by the sly Hao De Lun said. While her army was seized with paralyzing confusion, Kijo Akki rode hard for the rear of Li Jiacheng's army, hoping to strike at their supply route before it could be consolidated. Little did she expect that there was to be a mighty warrior overseeing its protection.
Tasked to defend the supply route by the Duke Zongren, the barbarian Mi Num was rather displeased. Far from wanting to be assigned to logistics, Mi Num had hoped to be able to fight alongside the rest of the enemy, to slay perhaps several dozen men, maybe even an officer! But alas, he was ordered to sit and make sure supplies got to the front line. Having gotten lost during her ride through the countryside, the Kijo noticed Mi Num sitting by himself, drinking his sorrows away. When asked just where the army of Li Jiacheng was, Mi Num first pointed towards the battlefront but, then in second consideration, pointed a completely opposite way, thinking that it was correct in his inebriated state. Thanking him for his kindness, the Kijo wandered off, oblivious to the fact that she had just spoken with the logistical officer for the King of Wu. Needless to say, the supplies were unharmed, and continued to flow in towards the front, ensuring that Yi Guang's men continued to fight at their best.
Unfortunately for the smaller force of the two Mas, the same could not be said for them. The studious Prefect, Xun Yin, put his knowledge to use and decided upon a poison that could be easily delivered and concealed within the depots of his enemy. Many of Lan Yin's men fell ill to the substance, leaving Kijo Akki's support weak and defenseless. The relentless bombardment of missiles from the siege engines of the Duke Zongren helped none either, and within just a few days of the campaign, Lan Yin found that his forces had been almost annihilated. With Li Jai taking charge of the coalition armies, the two forces skirmished with each other, testing out their strengths. The coalition army was found severely wanting, with Li Jai struggling and failing to force cohesion between the two allied armies. The men of the King of Wu were heartened by their successes, both against the front line and the rear of the enemy. It seemed as though this defense would be a brief campaign.
Still muddleheaded over their lack of leadership, made worse by the continued rumors about Xiahou Dingwu's ineptitude, the coalition forces continued to falter beneath the waves of men sent at them by the Supreme Commander, Yi Guang. Wishing to exploit the opening made by the Duke Zongren's machines, Yi Guang personally led a daring raid straight through the enemy lines, setting fire to many of the stores of food that the coalition armies depended upon. Kijo Akki hoped to do the same to the forces of Wu, but found that her horse was quite prone to stumbling into hidden pits and trenches dug by General Angdun Huan. As Yi Guang returned to his own lines, his men were surprised to see that he had brought someone along with him; a captive, the officer Chongte Jun, once deputy to the supply officer Lan Yin. Lan Yin himself, however, managed to evade capture and hide with the forces still fighting on against the overwhelming odds against them. Perhaps he should have just fled home.
With the Duke Zongren's siege engines now turned directly upon the main encampment of the coalition forces, it did not take long for the last of the Kijo's men to suffer one of the three fates of her soldiers: capture, desertion, or death. With Yi Guang's men flowing over their defenses, the Kijo's officers fought for as long as they could, each taking injuries before being overwhelmed and captured. Only one man managed to escape the battle: Lan Yin, who, upon hearing the terrifying sound of shattering wood, the telltale sign that the Duke Zongren's siege engines were attacking their encampment, fled immediately. Ultimately he and the dozens of desertions would be the only people who would relay the news of the coalition's defeat to the Marquis and Governor Ma Su. With the two armies under the Mas defeated, Yi Guang returned his armies into the city, certain that another attack would be coming again soon.
