It had been a long and tiresome day but it was over. The injured Alexandrus, along with Niu Gongzhu's help, was quickly shifted off and away to the doctors while a mentally exhausted Lei Anshui found her way to her own quarters. Yet, while those three busied themselves, Sho Tao approached those large ships on the river's banks. He intended to report the mission's success to Gan the Axe, to see what their next orders were. It was easy enough to reach his ship and once Sho Tao had reached it and explained why he had come to one of the ship's guards, he was escorted right to Gan's cabins. With a knock upon the door, the guard stepped back and fell in line with Tao. It didn't take long for the door to slam open and when it did, Captain Gan's frame was quick to move forth. With his lips set into that customary smirk, he listened to Tao's report.

It was an expression unchanged by the time Sho Tao had finished. Not so much as a moment's enjoyment crossed his features at the announce of the success. Not so much as a moment's discomfort crossed his features at the announce of their losses. Not even as much as a moment's tenseness crossed his features at the news of Raid Commander Chi's death. It was a report met with only a faint chuckle. "Ya think I expected any lass, boy?" he questioned. "Had ya failed, ya would be dead. Either by 'em or hangin' from the hooks for the damn river beasts. Get to ya quarters. We got preparations to do." he hissed before slamming shut the door of his cabin. With that, Tao was left to drift back to his camp.

The next few days quickly passed. Four days of bone grinding labor in which the pirates found themselves forced to work. Those who refused quickly found themselves banished from the camp and those who dared disregard that banishment found punishment soon enough. Punishment in the form of being tied up and tossed over the ship of Captain Gan's ships to the rivers beasts below. Through threat of death, Gan the Axe had come to dominant the very lives of those pirates. Yet, a crude chain of command was quickly formed. Twenty five men and elected elected to lead and control the aspects of the camp he could personally see to. Twenty five men and women which oversaw the preparation of that fleet of pirates. New ships was stolen from nearby villages. Crude ballistas and small mangrels constructed by engineers and workmen. Arrows carved and weapons sharpened. Leather hides boiled and carved and sewn into crude breastplates. It was hard and honest work many of the pirates was unused to. Yet, the threat of death got the work done even if crudely. By the time four days had passed, what might of been called a crude navy was prepared. Almost three hundred men with almost twenty ships, even though the majority was little more than stolen and crudely outfitted junkers, was prepared. Yet, even as Gan's cruel methods saw that army shape together, his cruelty served to inspire hatred amongst the men. To bring about hushed conversations of rebellion, of hangin' that man from his own ship for the dreaded river monsters.

Captain Gan had organized his navy, but, by the day it threatened to crumble. Even though each new day saw the external facets of the army strengthened, the internal chain of command was splintering. His domination of the crew failing. By the fourth day, more than one of Gan's aides was found dead. Even though the wreckage of those four ships clogged the river and the pirates could of easily had two more days of construction, the order was given. On the fifth day, an order to sail upon those ships and claim what they desired. The riches of Sun Wu's ships...

It was a gray morning. Dark clouds hung within the sky from a passing storm. The river's current was strong, whipping and slithering around the ships that fought against its might. Dark shadows of the beasts below passed along the edges of those ships, as if predicting the meal to come. A sharp and bitter wind beast against the sails of the ships. A wind that brought the smell of the swarming, humid, swamps and that caused the rigging of the ships to moan as oarmen hauled the ships forward. Yet, even with their sails denied by the winds, the horde was a terrifying sight. The two warships of Gan the Axe laid at the very rear of that column. Yet, upon their decks, laid a danger unmatched by the horde of smaller ships before it. Five mangrels laid upon each of those ship's decks. Small catapults that tossed bucket loads of pebbles and shattered wood at terrifying speeds, creating a swarm of deadly shrapnel for those unfortunate enough to be hit by it. While it would do little damage to Sun Wu's ships, it would maim the ship's crews. Yet, ahead of those massive warships, laid the majority of that host. Small cutters and junkers whose only hope laid within boarding the enemy. While the occasional ship boasted a ballista, each of the smaller ships knew their purpose. To board and slaughter both the mercenaries and merchants. To steal and plunder every last shred of bolt and chest of gems. To horde every golden, silver, and copper coin they came across.

Word had already reached the pirates about the enemy's formation. Gan's scouts had brought more than a detailed report. The scouts claimed the four trading vessels, the targets of the pirates, laid anchored within the middle of the river. The scouts claimed each of the ships laid stretched one to the next with scaffolding connecting them, something designed to assist the workers and mercenaries in their tasks but something that would only aid the pirates within their attack. Yet, guards supposedly lined each of those ships. Bowmen along its sides and swordsmen along its edges, ready to defend the ship against attackers. However, beyond the four trading barges, ten small cutters supposedly protected the barges. Small, swift, ships which boasted a ballista at each of their bows and which laid garrisoned with armed warriors ready to repel any boarders.

Yet, if the pirates was ready for what they approached, the enemy was just as ready. Word had seemingly reached the merchants about the pirate's approach and the mercenaries stood upon full guard. The cutters had formed a blockade before those trading vessels, a blockade the pirates would be forced to puncture.

Standing upon the stern of his ship, Gan the Axe squinted upon the blockade ahead. By the minute the oarsmen of the pirates drug the horde closer, preparing them for the conflict to come. Yet, gathered about Captain Gan, stood Lei Anshui, Niu Gongzhu, Alexandrus Publius, and Sho Tao. Four men and women who was the only people to share the stern with Gan despite the normal crew that would assist the captain. Yet, in silence, Gan stood, his brow creased as he gazed upon the blockade. Only for his lips to settle into a scowl as he saw it. Before the first cries even reached their ears, one of the smaller pirate ships had buckled and its crew sent flying. A ballista had smashed right through the fishing vessel and scuttled it almost instantly. The blockade had begun firing. "That blockade is going to massacre our men. It will bleed our ranks and take out more ships than I would like." Gan began within that well articulated voice. "We will lose half of our men, maybe more, before we break that blockade. It will be costly, but, it has to be done. Once that blockade is broken, we need to seize those ships. They're stranded as long as that blockade remains. Every ship their blockade sinks and every one of their ships we sink only makes them stranded all the longer. But, we need to break them today. If we do not crush them, the merchants will only get more support. They'll force the local warlords to help them protect the ship. They have enough money to bend the governors over if they wanted." Gan continued.

"You four will lead the assault upon the barges. You proved more effective than the rest of the fools." he hissed. "At least you managed to create this blockade to begin with. Get as many men as you can aboard those ships and move as fast as you can. The longer you fight, the longer they did in. Even if you may kill twenty of them in one room, forty could be barricading the next hallway. Damn, watch those fools." he commented as he pointed at the blockade ahead. Some of the pirates had managed to close upon the blockade and they scrambled aboard the cutters only to be slaughtered. "Listen," he began, "I want as many men as we can get to die. The more men die, the bigger share we get in the long run. The men want me dead. Well, I say let them die." he softly laughed. "The men aboard this ship and my other warship are loyal. My crew that has worked with me for years. You will need to watch your backs for the other. They are lying, cheating, bastards who would cut your throat for a single coin. We need them for now, though. We'll work beside them up until the point those ships are ours. Then, we'll kill them. You help me in the long run and I'll see you become rich bastards for this." he continued before looking at the blockade.

A few of the blockade's cutters was being overran and others was being pressed by the sheer tide of ships and men against them. "If you don't stand with me, you stand against me. Mao!" he barked only for a middle aged man to pull himself up and onto the stern. "Get these bastards on their vessel." Gan barked only for Mao to nod. Quickly turning away, Mao slipped off the stern and motioned for the others to follow. Presuming they came, they was quickly led to the side of the ship. A small cutter laid roped to the warship. A crew already stood upon it and oarmen stood in place, ready for once they disembarked. Motioning at a brace of ropes, Mao grasped at one and slid himself downwards to the boat below. Presuming Lei Anshui, Niu Gongzhu, Alexandrus Publius, and Sho Tao followed, Mao motioned for the oarmen to get ready as he took up a hatchet and quickly severed the tying ropes. "Damn bastard." Mao hissed as he turned his gaze upon his supposed commanders. "Welcome to the suicide squad. We get the grand pleasure of leadin' the charge." he hissed even as the oarmen pushed them towards the remnants of the blockade.

Less than ten minutes had passed and it was already in shambles. Only a few of the blockade's cutters remained and eleven of the pirates' ships laid scuttled or sinking. "Ya ever board a boat like that?" Mao questioned.

"Alright, we have our orders. Stick together. We can take the ships one at a time. First take out the mercenaries, then get the merchants to take a swim. If things get rough, we can always take off with what we have. Greed is good, but you can't spend gold if your six feet under. We can deal with everything as it comes. Agreed?"

Sho Tao will attempt to board and commandeer the closest warship and go from there. Along with the rest of the PCs and his orignal 10 soldiers. Unless the PCs have their own agendas.

I have no qualms with sticking together. The four of us, no matter what our...allies here do... She fell in behind the others. Normally, she would happily lead the assault, but while her traditional garb was fairly tough were it did cover her body, it would be a fair bit more exposed in close quarters, were her guan dao could not keep enemies from getting too close and overwhelming her skill with their strength.

The young war leader followed Sho Tao swiftly, once he started the boarding, and even in the confined space, she did her best to use the tougher armour of her fellows as well as her reach to ward herself better.

Upon meeting up with the other survivors and with some fixing up he gathered his gear and was ready for battle. He stood on the boat as the others spoke and nodded. "Let their blood spill." he mumbled and charged up behind his allies being somewhat more cautious than he had before when they began to board and with halberd in hand prepared to fight off the enemies.

OOC Note: Whoo! e_e Let's try and get all of our activity up and improved, guys. I know we've all been busy with the Holidays and some of us with college starting up, but, let's get going! Move those dead bones or your characters may end up dead!

Mao could only scowl as the four officers ignored him. Yet, with a hiss of anger, he turned away from those men and women and cast his gaze upon the crew. "Get those oars moving! The longer we're out here, the longer they can shoot at us!" he shouted before stepping forward. Grabbing at a thick length of rope with a curving bronze hook at the end, he thrust it at one of the sailors. "Once we get in close, start throwing. Get them to hook on and then we climb! Go quickly." he barked before thrusting men towards the ropes to grasp at them and ready themselves. By the moment, that sloop cut across the water and eased closer to that first barge. Above them, enemy soldiers bustled with activity. A small army laid before them, archers and swordsmen ready to repel them.

The men and women upon that ship would be the first to arrive. The first to board that ship and to create a boarding point upon that armored barge. Yet, they would hardly be the last. By the moment their fellow pirates oared forward, untangling from the broken remains of the enemy's ships. Yet, to board the ship, they would first have to close the distance and every foot brought a new chance of death. For every foot that boat slithered forward across the churning waters of the Changjiang, a hundred rocks and arrows fell towards that ship and its crew. With oarmen and boarders diving for cover, the ship's progression was slowed. Yet, with a scowl upon his lip, Mao screamed and hissed his men back into action. Even as Mao urged his men forward and towards that barge, those projectiles had begun to take their costly toll. In a matter of moments, four men laid dead. Yet, Mao was undeterred. Even as a rock whistled past his head, he screamed for his men to continue forward.

Finally, they was within range. The boarders had begun to toss upwards their ropes, catching them upon the railings while oarmen dropped their tasks and picked up bows to cover their fellow men. "Get up those ropes!" Mao hissed to the men even as the first line was put into place. Yet, turning upon the officers, Mao gave them a steady glance and gave a nod before tossing his own line upwards. With a tug to make sure it was secure, he leaped forward and began to clamor up the side of that boat with the officers hopefully following him...

Tao and his men threw up their lines and began the climb up the hull of the first boat. Attempting to secure the deck with minimal losses.
"Men, when we get on deck, hedgehog formation. Use your halberds to push them back and off the decks."

Anshui tossed up a line as well, though she started her climb slightly later than the others. She needed them to clear a little space for her to use that Guan Dao effectively, anyways. Still, not wishing to be targetted by arrows in her lighter armour, sher rushed up the line, once it was in place for her to climb.
