Tai had enough of this man, and his barking of orders. She did not let him go to the room, pushing past him and in front of him, not caring what he thought. She turned to him, anger apparent.

"You bark orders, like a yapping dog! You show little compassion for your fellow man, and think you are the only one who can see things. Your bravado and insolence will get people killed, and I hope one day you yourself die from it." She wasn't done, but she knew she was stronger than him, as odd as it seemed. "You are not the only one who can lead here, no matter how much you play at it. Perhaps you should let people take their own actions, as we know what we do best. If you have anything of use to ever say, perhaps you might try talking, instead of yapping, and nipping at our heels. if you insist on acting like a dog, I shall treat you as a dog, and I know my King of Blood would back me over you, you spineless jellyfish of a man!"

At that Tai turned and entered the room, to attend to Liao Teng, and see if he could be saved. if her rant had cost him any chance of it, and he still died, she would feel no guilt for it, as to her, the burden of this man's death lay on Bai Rui, and insulting attitude towards her. She would not lose sleep over this one bit.

Rui never once backed down while the emotional woman screamed at him. Nor did fear or doubt ever enter his expression. In fact, if one could describe Rui's expression in one word, that word would be: nothing. There was nothing to be gleaned, nothing to act upon. His eyes might as well have been brick walls for all the emotion they showed. It certainly wasn't the look of a frightened man, nor of an intimidated one. It was the look of a trained strategist.

Without a word, he allowed her to rant at him, waiting patiently for her to stop wasting their time and get to doing something useful for once, rather than running around without a plan. Once she stopped, he calmly walked into the room, and went for the documents. As he bent down and kneeled on the floor, he grabbed a few of the strewn documents before finally speaking up.

"Do you know how long I've got to live?" he asked her calmly. "Probably no more than a dozen years, if that," he informed her. "Heaven gave me my mind, but rejected giving me a healthy body, probably to keep me humble."

"So I have been; humble, that is. I use my skills to save people, whatever else you might think," he continued as he calmly examined the documents, not a hint of emotion leaking into his tone. "But to me, a plan is what saves people, not individual effort. If the world worked that way, why wouldn't the mightiest warriors be kings all the time? Why is it that most of them die through plots, or mischief? Simply put, because individualistic effort and individualistic planning is worthless."

He never once turned to look at Ju Li, instead focusing on the documents before him. "Do you understand what I'm saying, General Tai?" he asked mildly. "I am saying that if you insist on carrying your own way all the time without consulting others and thinking things through, you will be responsible for far more death than I ever will," he informed her. "As for me? Considering my profession, General Tai, I aim to get others killed. As many as possible, in fact, until the day I die, that the righteous, greater goal of my masters may be that much closer to being fulfilled."

He turned his gaze on her now, empty of compassion and fully rational. It was the gaze of someone who didn't only know the Dark Art of War, but fully embraced it. Chaos before peace; massacre in the name of the greater good. All roads are equal, so long as they lead to the greater goal. "Having a body that will fail on me eventually, General Tai, do you really think threatening me with your personal bodyguard will make me quiver? That I'll repent and ask forgiveness? I have been cursed by Heaven to guide thousands to their deaths in a body that is failing and has no cure. I do not fear you. I do not fear your King of Blood. I do not fear death."

He turned his gaze back on the documents. "Now please, do us a favor and save that man. He may have valuable intelligence as to what on earth is going on in this town," he said calmly as he continued sifting through the documents.

(Rui is unfazed! He continues sifting through the documents! :P)

Yu did not seize the man. Upon hearing the order he marched up to where the old man was, keeping his eye on him, but his hands off. He did not know the reason why he was supposed to seize him, and he did not want to before he is told just it. So he asked loudly, "Why are we seizing an injured old man?!" Expecting Bai Rui to answer him.

Upon hearing Yan Yu's query, Rui diverted his attention from his search through the documents briefly to answer the man. "Jue, the man who hired us, was killed by throat slitting," Rui informed Yu. "Liao Teng, for his part, was injured after the fact, it seems, and was quite possibly the source of the scream we all heard," he added. "Rationally speaking, then, there must be a third person involved in this mess. If we go by deduction, then, and assuming that no one passed by you and General Tai as you took the rear entrance and we took the rest, that third person must still be in the house--most likely up on this floor," he analyzed.

"General Yan, can you tell me whom, not in our group, is nearest to the crime scene right now?" he asked calmly, expecting the general to see where he was going with this line of thought.

Shaozu remained at the back entrance. He heard Rui order the capture of some man, and then some arguing. He almost went to find out what was going on, but thought better of it. He figured if they had opportunities to argue, they had captured whomever it was and didn't want to leave the exit unguarded... Surely, if anyone needed him, they would call...

Pan Shaozu remains guarding the back exit/entrance!

Zhuwen, like his companion, was annoyed by Bai Rui who had been giving out orders. If there was anyone who was to give him orders, it would be someone that was of higher rank than him or at least a woman with a pretty face like Ding Yi. He considered just killing the man right there, but decided it would only cause more problems for the future.

He casually walked in on the same room, frowning at the scene. Exactly what was going on? Zhuwen did a light sigh, not the best at guessing and estimating at what would happen.

And then Zhuwen could only sigh and scratch the back of his head at the exchange between his companion and Bai Rui. It wasn't like Zhuwen blamed Tai for getting angry, the man was getting to him as well. He looked at the other commanders, frowning at the fact that he probably wouldn't hear the end of it if he killed Bai Rui.

"Yeah yeah no gives a s*** you pseudo-intellectual," Zhuwen simply said as he proceeded out of the current rooms to check the other rooms. He had his hand ready on the hilt of his blade, in case of anything.

Zhuwen checks room D! And of course, nothing personal in all these RPs!

[RL is kicking my ass!]

Yang Yu did see what Bai Rui was getting at, but with he said nothing, and instead went inside the room to see if what he said was true. His eyes first fell on Jue, dead with his throat slit, and Liao Teng, unconscious with Tai Ju Li tending to him. Yu did not know what to think. He had been angry at the man for lying and using them for his own purposes, and he wanted to be the one to apprehend him and shake the truth out of him. Well, it looks like we'll have to learn what's really going on from another source...

Walking out of the room he said to Bai Rui without looking, "And, did it never occur to you that perhaps Liao Teng and the 'Magistrate' fought against each other? Liao Teng managed to kill the man but he got injured in the process. Do not be so sure yet." After being duped to thinking they were liberating the town from bandits, Yu was now more careful of his assumptions.

Approaching the old man, Yu said, "I hope you are better now. Who are you?" Yu asked in a straightforward manner.

Yu questions the old man!

Mansion

The old man seemed unimpressed by the change of attitude by some. From injured old man to suspect in this mess.

"The man you are looking for knocked me down on his way to do that!" he pointed to the room.

"I could only stare in shock, he surprised one with a knock and then proceeded to kill the other as he scr..."

He stopped then. Hesitated and acted like he was about to throw up. He seemed about to protest his innocence more when he seemed to decide it would be best to let the half of them that believed him fight for him.

Surprisingly, (good roll) Teng actually opened his eyes in fear, as if waking from a nightmare. The old man was the most surprised as he saw him sit upright from his vantage point in the stairs. He bolted but was quickly overpowered by the men guarding the exits as they converged on the main hall.

Teng was not the bravest soul and he spilled all he knew to the people present. Sometime during the start of his story as Ju Li saw to his injuries, Ding Yi and Wei arrived and were able to listen in. The old assassin, now revealed for what he was confirmed the story and added his own bits, his very nature did not allow him the privilege of honor or any such non sense as he described it.

Teng explained he was the liaison between the man behind this whole situation and the town magistrate, the leader of the thought bandits, Zhuang Quqi. They were all working for some small man that styled himself Revenge. It was very important for him to make it look like the town was under siege constantly by bandits or raiders. He didn't care how, just so long as multiple battles would occur. Seemed to be for some distraction.

"The first two battles he didn't like because the casualties were at a minimum and it didn't create enough stir according to him, so he thought out this plan to have you all brought in. He even said he was amongst you, one of the volunteers, crazy bastard. When you guys broke the first army we sent out, he used that moment to complete whatever it was he was doing. Two things happened then. First the town got some reinforcements from some righteous governor here in Dai, we still don't know who and the men didn't wear uniforms, which put Quqi ill at ease. Quqi was then told Revenge had arranged for the battle to be won by the town so he'd look good defeating so many. Jue, an old employee of Quqi would call off the attack or make sure the defenders won, how could they lose with these new reinforcements anyway? When we saw you guys, we knew something was wrong, you didn't look like an army that would lay down your arms. Quqi took me aside in the battle early and told me to wait here for Jue, surely something had changed in the plan as it became obvious we were the ones that would lose badly. We sacrificed the others and prepared our retreat."

Teng did not seem embarrassed or to be feeling remorse, like it was something that had to be done.

"I waited for Jue and he met me here. The whole time, screaming at me about documents. That's all I remember, him shoving documents in my face, red as a lobster. And his wide eyes as he saw something behind me."

The old man did not seem to have much information. he was paid by a man that fit the description of Revenge and he sprained his ankle when trying to make his escape. He was told to spare Teng if possible, or not, his choice. Since he had not seen him, the old man, identifying himself as Hao Zhi, said he did not take the time to finish him. There were three of them hired for different jobs within the town, though they knew not the identities of the others or their targets, they were informed of this fact for some reason, perhaps to avoid overlay. He did not seem to feel any sadness at being captured or the consequences of being caught.

Organizing a scouting party, the heroes of Baideng followed up on a lead from Teng about the master mind's hideout. The time spent in the town allowed him to escape, leaving yet one last body behind, that of Zhuang Quqi. They didn't miss him by much, a lot was left at the make shift cabin in the woods, including a camp of 1000 men that were easily captured and did not resist.

QUEST COMPLETED! cue ending credits and music

Gold found at the house, left over from the campaign and at the hideout amounts to 1480 gold, so 148 gold each. For those of you that wish to, you can bring 400 (50) soldiers with 400 spears back with you to be added to your PAs if you are not serving someone, if you are part of a kingdom, you MUST trade that in for an extra 60 gold. Post ending RPs here if you wish and please let me know what you choose (soldiers or gold) so I can update your OMs.

To his credit, Rui decided not to rub the fact that he had been right in the faces of his sceptical colleagues. Instead, he merely nodded along as the story was told, a neutral expression on his face to avoid the semblance of gloating. His own thoughts remained humble. He had been right thus far, and had succeeded in finding the true ending of this rather perplexing episode, but that didn't mean he would always be right in the future.

Later, standing by himself in the middle of the town square, observing the aftermath of this rather tragic misadventure, Rui tried to analyze the information he had gleaned off of his colleagues. Tai Ju Li and her pet bodyguard were trouble; but not of the battlefield kind. More likely, they were trouble due to the fact that their personalities would reject any force's attempt to use Darkness tactics to achieve the greater good. That made them a future threat to him, and he marked them down for further analysis.

General Yan, at first, had proven himself to be a level-headed leader, but the scene at the mansion made Rui reconsider this conclusion. The man had been unnecessarily emotional and contradictory, almost allowing for a potential suspect to escape, and prior to that, needlessly rushing into an unknown situation without any real muscle to back him up. General Pan Shaozu, however, had proven trustworthy and level-headed, as had General Zheng, who had rightly taken the initiative when Rui himself had been too cautious.

Idly, though, as he gazed up at the sky, he wondered who this Revenge character was. They had managed to round up Zhang Quqi's body, Liao Teng, Jue's body, and the assassin's, but Revenge was still at large, as far as he knew. What was his game? What had his intentions been?

Sighing at the fact that this puzzle was still not truly over, Rui made his way over to his awaiting carriage, which he had hired for the express purpose of taking him back to his oath brother. That quest...could wait another day.

He chuckled to himself. Hopefully, without the presence of over-emotional women and their protective guard dogs.

(Rui takes the gold! On both counts!)

For the most part, Zhuwen was annoyed. He wanted to kill the magistrate by himself, or at least this Revenge character, but it seemed he would have none of that today. Zhuwen would make note of this Revenge character, he was going to be on the kill list. He yawned, tired and wanting to get this day over with. A nice drink at the local tavern, maybe some women, and a good night's sleep. At least the battles had been somewhat entertaining.

He looked at the captured men they had gotten, wondering what to do with them. And then an idea came to him... Why not take them as his personal followers? Maybe participate in some battles in the near future with them. The thought wasn't too bad, it wasn't like he or Tai was going to serve anyone soon.

"Okay then. There's nothing left for you boys now," Zhuwen told his captured soldiers. "Your boss left ya, you're probably gonna get abused by the villagers. So I have a proposal. Join me. Work's going to be simple, we're gonna go around this land and we're gonna party whenever there's a battle. Get payed too and stuff. Nothing's left for you here, and who knows if this Revenge guy or whatever is gonna gack you all. Sounds like his character right? So, for all of you who still have balls, work for me, and we'll have some fun."

Zhuwen smiled, waiting to see which of the captured soldiers would take his offer...

Taking the troops! 148 gold, 400 (50) troops, and 400 Pi Spears gained!
