Shu'er remained thoughtful for a little longer, still gazing distantly out the window as Bei Tianmeng returned to his seat. A moment later, as his question sank in just as she reached a conclusion to her own thoughts, she gave Bei a gentle smile.

"There's more than one reason, I guess," she answered. "For one, I wouldn't be able to help as many people as a doctor if I tie myself down to one place, or worse, one side of a conflict. But listening to your thoughts, Master Bei, I figured out something else as well."

The smile she gave next was somewhat wistful, but still warm. "When you were speaking of your people, you said that we are nothing without them, yet they need us to guide and protect them... Something struck me as strange then, and just now, I think I understood: I am 'them.' I cannot picture myself with the likes of you or your Lord, who stand above others and can lead them, protect them, change their lives. I'm just a doctor...I live my life plying my trade and helping others; the poor farmer at the village edge and the wounded soldier hiding in the woods, they're worth as much to me as any Lord would be, and I would help them as readily. So...I cannot imagine myself apart from everyone else the way most men of power do, whether in word or in practice, whether out of good intentions or bad..."

As Shu'er spoke of both her reasoning and new-found thoughts and feelings, Bei felt a warm feeling well up from deep inside. He then nodded and spoke quite happily, "I believe I understand what you mean. Until very recently, I lead a small group of a couple hundred men whom I cared for and thought about doing nothing more than avoiding these very walls that now surround me. There was a warm feeling that I felt, caring for them and putting their needs ahead of my own. Seeing to their health and that of their families was a welcome reward that nothing else provided.

"Of course, I have given up that life for the one I am now leading. For you to wish and choose to remain in a position where you can give more of yourself to everyone in need, is an admirable, noble and even courageous path. I cannot say for sure, but perhaps I left that very life, because I did not have the strength to live it. To see and hear someone else doing it... brings me great joy." Bei then grinned. "And, I'm sure you do not need to hear these words that you probably know yourself, but never let anyone make you feel or tell you that what you are doing is not as important."

"You overestimate me, Master Bei," Shu'er replied. "I've only just realized this, after all...but thank you. I'm glad I came here to meet you." She grinned a little wider. "And I'm glad your letter was smudged and got me curious enough to do it. I can't help you in the way you want, I guess...but I certainly wish you good luck in continuing to protect the people of Hann."

With a wide grin and a light laugh, Bei Tianmeng bowed his head slightly to Shu'er. "I'm also glad that the letter was smudged. It's funny how such random occurrences can lead to such meaningful moments. I think we both shall walk away from this with new perspectives, which is a very good thing." Bei then paused a moment before tilting his head to one side. "I do think you will be able to help in some way, though. You said yourself you wish to not align yourself to any side of a conflict, so that you may help all in need. If you should ever find yourself in Henan, then perhaps you may be helping these people after all. In fact, I would ask that you keep in touch, should you ever need any extra help that I may be able to provide. My medical knowledge is probably very meager to yours, but I shall gladly assist with anything. Of course, this is my own personal gesture... since I cannot say if my Lord would fully approve of such a thing."

"If it comes to that, I'll be sure to look you up." Shu'er grinned and winked. "And likewise, if you ever don't have enough people to treat your sick and injured...as I said, I'm around to help. I'll even give you a discount if I'm not too far away."

Standing, she looked around and gave Bei Tianmeng a short bow. "Well, I probably shouldn't keep you too much longer, and I should be getting back to work myself. Take care, Master Bei."

It was late afternoon when the body of Zhang Liang returned to Hann. He was brought by handlers from Henan who were, of course, summarily executed. Those that received the body winced at the shape it was in; it took the work of Yangdi's best undertaker to prepare it for burial. A plot in the royal burial gardens of Hann was selected and an empty mausoleum served as Liang's final resting place. Official scribes were called in to etch a list of the man's accomplishments on the inside of the tomb and a plaque of all his titles and honors was fixed at the back as well as hampers and pots containing various effects of the man for his spirit to use in the afterlife. The Chief Aide's family was allowed to settle his estate and minor Hann titles would be given to his next-of-kin.

Most of the officers were in attendance for the grand procession of Zhang's coffin through the graveyard, those that had served in the battle of Xingyang being at the forefront. Ying Ranzhen himself opened the tomb's door for the coffin and personally lit the candles inside. Zhang Ban stood with him while the various ceremonies were carried out and he joined the governor on the walk back to the palace.

"Are you alright, sir?"

Ranzhen looked up and blinked; he had been staring out into the distance for most of the journey and they were lagging behind the main group. "Oh, it is a setback. Zhang Liang represented a rallying point for us, an easy way to get the nobles of Hann on our side. However, he was an unknown, extra, element as well: My original plans didn't count on him when we first settled here, so what could be affected?" The governor wryly smiled at his second. Zhang Ban had followed him for years now and he expected the man to be able to keep up with things. "We can only rebuild and continue on with an adjusted scenario. The infighting and bickering at the capital give us opportunities to rebound faster, as does the death of Zhang Liang himself. For the good of the state, none of us can shirk our duty, especially at this point." They reached the side entrance to the main palace and the bodyguard opened the door. "Have a carriage ready in the morning and be ready for a long ride, Ban. We shall simply have to play every piece on the chessboard at this point."

With that, the governor retired for the evening.

War.

War is constantly evolving, whether it be placed under the guise of justice or that of tyranny, war is, without a doubt, a never-ending cycle of death that will never cease. But as a cycle that goes without a climax, with death comes rebirth.
Within the city of Yangdi, troops amass at the governor's to witness the forthcoming of a new lord. Out steps a recently-enlisted officer, Caninus, from the governor's building. Beside him, Lee, a most aggravating translator. Lee would translate the speech to come from the foreigner.

"Men of Hann! I have stepped up to sieze leadership over this province, as well as the remnants of the military forces Ying Ranhzen built! Under my banner, you will find yourself swimming in pools of gold, showering yourselves under foutains of wine, and vanquishing your foes to the very gates of hell on the battlefield! We will not allow any who dares to cross our paths to hinder our ambitions with excuses for their injust and unreasonable expansion practices, for in this time of chaos, men of war may thrive on the blood-soaked grounds where the battles in which we meet with these heathens, will be the very grounds where such fools are placed on a cross! Let this be a demonstration of our righteous judgement, soon to be the ideal method of punishment layed upon morally-ill cowards!"

Lee, the man who had just translated all of Caninus' speech, was siezed by a few foreign soldiers. In the distance, a few men carrying a very large cross approached, planting the cross into the ground before the governor's building. Lee is, shortly thereafter, nailed at the hands and feet to this structure, although he's kept alive. Nevestus returns to the interior of the building, his foreign men following closely behind.
3 days have passed since then and Lee still hangs from the cross, still holding onto what little life is left within him.
