Shen Feng wrote:The young man turned general sighed softly. "You are a powerful woman, Lei Anshui, beautiful and powerful. You should not be beholden to one such as Deng Yue, you should be free to make your own decisions, to follow your own heart. I will not ask you to fight for me. I just want you to do what's right for yourself and your tribe. I wrote to you earlier about my dreams, my intentions should I be able to govern the southland. If your people, your tribes, are seen as being aligned with bandits, then I fear true peace and coexistance will not occur for a long time. It pains me to see you being used like that, but..."

Feng bit his lip, looking away from Anshui. "I'm sorry, my lady. This is something I feel strongly about, but if I try to push you too hard, then I am no better than him."
I don't feel indebted to him. He is, at best, my partner, and at worst, he supplies me with payment adequately as one of your peasants would have a lord protect them. And once that word is given, it is not one I am oft willing to take back. I am the warrior, not he. As for the town in Changsha, it was but an experiment. My parents were fond of it, but there are other towns, in locales more hospitable to nomads...lands less inhabited. Lands like this. She stopped ther, and listened to herself. This man was...convincing, even if he wasn't trying, as he said. He just had that way about him, and that made Anshui worry. The beauteous warrior scowled at the idea she was being used. If that proved true, oh, there would be all the Heavens to pay. But she did not believe so. Not yet. Anshui was a barbarian, yes, but this did not make her rash.

Smiling, she finally adds, Still, do continue. I do like to revel in such flattery. The beautfiul maiden was caught off guard by the sudden stroke of the warrior companion's tongue, however, and she replied only curiously, with only a slight hint of amusement, Seem? And why do I...seem...so?

Jian seemed to relax a bit as if convinced that his little outburst would go relatively unnoticed, or at least unacknowledged, until she asked him why he felt she seemed like a good leader. Again his cheeks flushed slightly as his dark eyes transfixed on hers, revealing that he was enamored by her. Shrugging he then gestured towards her and replied, "well, besides being...well, very beautiful, you are obviously a skilled warrior and, judging by what you and commander Feng have been discussing, it appears as though you care a great deal for your people. And," he went on to say, "your filial devotion is to be respected as well. You did say that part of your involvement in Changsha was due to your parents being fond of it, right?"

With that he shook his head before finally adding, "that is why I hate to see someone like you being...manipulated in such a fashion. I do not fault people for trusting, but rather those who exploit that trust, as Deng Yue has been doing."

Well, he hadn't upset her as he'd worried he might. Indeed, she seemed to enjoy flattery, as she'd hinted in her letter. Feng knew he'd have to be careful with his words, lest he attempt to manipulate her as Deng Yue was.

"I think Jian here might be giving enough flattery for the both of us." Feng grinned, looking again to his warrior companion, who seemed quite smitten. Of course, it was easy to see why one would be with Anshui. Hopefully Jian wouldn't get too distracted by her, knowing that they might wind up on opposite sides of a battlefield eventually. "I can see why Deng Yue tried so hard to win you over. I would have to assume that he tried just as hard with the Axe Gang, and with the local Linjiang nobles he's won over. That's probably what bothers me the most, that he puts you on the level of the bandits. He views you as a source of manpower for his armies, a fierce warrior to lead his men into battle. He sees Guan Huang the same way, I am sure. Guan Huang has razed towns, while you have not, but what is the difference in how he has treated you?"

"You will not see me attempting to speak with the Axe Gang to convince them they should side with me instead of Deng Yue. I have no interest in having them do my bidding, given the chance, I would chase them out of the south altogether. That's the difference between the two of us. He will do anything to try desperately to preserve his power, no matter the cost. I have enough faith in my ability and the ability of my followers, and faith that I'm doing what's right, that I won't stoop to those levels myself. I will talk to you because you're a good person, a person who hasn't engaged in plunder and does want what's best for the south. I certainly won't negotiate with the bandits. And judging by what Deng Yue's envoy to me said, I don't see much room for negotiation with him, as delusional as he is. Deng Yue's cousin, as an envoy to my army, spoke of you and the bandits in the same sentence as if you were equals, as if you were interchangable. Honestly, it made me quite angry." As he spoke, his fist clenched, remembering the words from Deng Bou quite well. "You deserve better than that, Anshui. I hope that, when I win and take Linjiang, I shall be able to provide it for you."

Well, my parents really wish to give this town...village...whatever it is a go. I think I'll let the clan remain here and experiment further. But I wish to see more of this land, and intend to travel. I have gotten some correspondence, and there are things I have heard I wish to see...Especially things that may draw a warrior's eye. Anshui finally said, mentioning that she wished to take a beast and some guards northward, in the hopes of learning more about these Han folk...

I think I am supposed to say something along the lines of your being too kind, Jian, though I am not sure why you Han are fond of saying this when you are being told truth. Still, I am not certain how you have deduced my skill from watching me fall off that accursed beast. Well, the army's scouts had probably seen her. She was a public figure after all, an exotic being who wandered about Linjiang's settled folkduring trips for trading goods and such. Anshui was well aware of her talents and attributes, and she did not even find her filial devotion as any sort of oddity. My parents are the chiefs of the clan, though I am the War leader. In more important matters, it is their decision I obey, but in the bloody business of fighting, the best warrior has to take precedence. I do not see how obeying my chief is any sort of oddity...And Deng Yue has brought us benefits. It is not in our interest to end that partnership so soon, but if the situation changes, then they will decide again.

Interchangeable? I...This is disturbing news. Still, you must understand I cannot simply take the word of an enemy of my partner as proof. I simply have not met anyone who is my equal, not in battle especially, and I doubt that could possibly be true. Knowing this...how are you confident that you can so simply seize Linjiang, when I, having given my word, intend to stand in its defense? Anshui pauses, then looking at her blade thoughtfully, she does add, Still...if you can indeed manage this monumental task...Perhaps there is real worth in you after all.

"I know, it's my word against his. Well, in this case it was just Deng Yue's diplomat, not even him personally. I don't think he's brave enough to visit me himself, though I'd guarantee his safety if he did." Feng shrugged again, wondering exactly what kind of person Deng Yue was. While he didn't have a high opinion of him, he'd never met the man personally. He must be doing something right to get these people to side with him, given how the common folk were fearful of his alignment with the Axe Gang. Of course, 'something right' could just as easily be extensive bribery. "You've met him and spent some time with him, I'm sure. So you tell me, has he treated you better than them? You'd know better than I. All I have is the word of this diplomat."

As Anshui talked of her skill in battle, Feng nodded slowly. "While I haven't seen you fight, by all accounts you're a fearsome warrior. If you do defend Linjiang against us, we shall be hard-pressed to defeat you. But I have numbers on my side, my soldiers are well-drilled and well-armed veterans from Chu, whereas Deng Yue has to rely on bandits to pad his army. No one person can sway a battle entirely on their own. Well, except the Hegemonic King, Xiang Yu." Feng glanced skyward and grinned, able to look back on his meetings with the King fondly now, though at the time he had been quite frightened. "I am not his equal, and there are few if any who are. But he has entrusted me with this task and I will not let him down. If you fight against us, Anshui, I fear you shall be defeated. I do hope you survive, of course. I would not wish to cause you harm, but I must set things in Linjiang right. Doing so is more important than any one person's well-being, even my own."

Deng Yue laughed a bit, because he wished too that he could travel the world.

Deng Yue: Those are definitely things that are worth doing. I hope that you show that us, Yue people, are made from good stock.

Deng Yue, then looked up to see that the day will be nearing its end, and soon realized that he must come back to the main camp to prepare for the battle.

Deng Yue: I must leave soon, are there anything that I can do for you?

Shen Feng

Deng Bou sighed, knowing that there would be no end to this argument unless it is put forth himself.

Deng Bou: These are bold claims that you're making, and we each have our own stories. Lets hope to see who wins so that the victor will write the story. Do you have anything that you wish to tell my lord?

"If I could tell him one thing, I'd tell him to open his eyes. Power granted by tyranny is not the way to build lasting peace, however attractive it is in the short-term." Feng pursed his lips and nodded, still bothered by Deng Bou's earlier words. "The First Emperor was a man of tremendous power, but because he was cruel and selfish, his empire barely outlived him. By employing bandits and ignoring their actions, Deng Yue repeats those mistakes. And I'll admit, it makes my task a lot easier to have that. People are always ready to rally against a villain. But I feel for the people in Linjiang who are forced to live with this, the people in Changsha who have died because of this. I would hope that Deng Yue will see the light and deliver justice to these criminals. Perhaps then I could leave him with Changsha once I am done." Feng turned to his command tent, ready to leave, before glancing back to leave Deng Bou with his parting words. "But I'm not holding my breath."

As Shen Feng pulled open the flap of the tent to enter it, Deng Bou was briefly able to see a strategic map of Linjiang within on a table, with markers indicating troop encirclements of Jiangling. Before any more could be seen, the tent flap fell in the way. The guards, eyeing the envoy warily, escorted him back to the edge of the camp without incident, permitting him to return to his lord.

Jian smiled before giving her an obvious once over with his eyes, as if to indicate how he would have come to the conclusion that she was a capable warrior. "Well what is expected and proper to some is not to others, unfortunately, and not everyone is loyal to their family as they should be," he then said in response to her surprise about his appreciation for her filial devotion. He listened to her describe why she worked for this Deng Yue and a slight scowl formed on his young face. "Benefits? The same sort of benefits the Qin emperor gave his subjects? Too bad you lack the far sighted vision to see that your immediate payoffs may end up costing you more in the long run," He said with a look of disappointment. Shrugging his shoulders he went on to add, "but please, disregard my foolish statements. I can only imagine the burdens you carry with having to fight for your people. Having to not only deal with prejudice for being Yue, now you must balance providing for your people with the inevitable fact that your associations with Deng Yue, and his Axe Gang, will most likely set your people back decades in the eyes of the empire."

He really didn't mean to offend her, having mostly felt sorry for her even if he too was a bit naive in his affiliations with one as cruel as the King of Chu, but for some reason his better judgment was clouded greatly by this woman. Until now he had never met a woman who could not only give him a run for his money when it came to combat, but could most likely mop the floor with him. Of course, given his words, it was obvious he hadn't considered this factor before being so blunt.

Feng looked to Jian, a bit worried that he might be going too far, though he didn't reprimand the warrior. Anshui would know he was just speaking for himself. "I thank you for your time, Anshui, but we must be departing. I hope you will think my words over. If you do still choose to fight for Deng Yue, we shall not hold back against you, but I shall see to it that you are well-treated if you are defeated." Turning, Feng climbed into his saddle, looking down from the horse to the barbarian warrior. "Heh, if I had more time I'd help you with horseback lessons. But there's a lot on my plate now, so forgive me."

Taking the reins of his horse, Feng waited for last words from Luo Jian or Lei Anshui before departing.
