Guiyang - Zhao Fan's Audience Hall

Postby Phailak » Fri Jan 19, 2018 3:18 pm

Guiyang's audience hall stands grand and tall for all to see. Any who seek an audience with its lord can simply approach one of the guards and request it.

Hu Jing was surprised when the government messenger gave him a letter, especially one addressed from Lord Zhao Fan himself. Hu Jing had moved out of Guiyang over a year earlier, closing down his failing barbershop – apparently men didn’t want finely manicured beards anymore, unkempt was all the rage nowadays! He had actually taken to the hills and dales and become a bandit in the local region. Sure he had participated in the expulsion of Liu Bei for mercenary coin, but he still didn’t expect his banditry to be forgiven so easily.

Needless to say he presented his letter of introduction from Zhao Fan to the guards at the audience hall entrance with a shrug, his bushy beard bristling with a bemused expression. “I, uhh, was asked to come here by Lord Zhao? Is his Lordship available?”

He and his bandit buddies had recently suffered a falling out and he was back to square one and just starting back out on his rebellious ruffianship - so the chance at a polite meeting with the local lord was a nice change of things. Of course it could also all be a trap resulting in his demise or captured, but really...was that so bad compared to starving in the woods?

One of the two guards looked up the visitor and shrugged. They had heard rumors more folks would be coming to Guiyang in hopes of carving a small piece of the kingdom.

He was brought to a small room but did not have to wait long. A long haired beauty escorted the man to a majestic grand hall where Fan sat upon a dais.

"You must be Master Hu, welcome to Guiyang, do you wish to have some refreshments?"

Fan's eyes kept darting back to an attendant by a side door, as if he was nervous about something.

Hu Jing smoothed out his unruly beard and gave a polite bow of his head when he was bid to follow the lovely guide and smiled; he stole a glance at her read end when he got the chance, though he did his best to keep from outright ogling the beauty. As he was brought in to Zhao Fan's audience chambers he bowed low to the man out of respect - there was a sizeable rank difference between the governor of Guiyang and a bandit who had, at worst plagued - at best annoyed, the Guiyang government. Hu could only assume he was even allowed this far because his banditry had been closer to the annoyance than the plague of stress for the locals.

As the man on the dais offered him refreshments something in his mind told him to refuse. "I shouldn't do it, it could be poisoned."
Then that same voice in his head seemed to change its tune quickly enough. "Of course...to be fair we have spread a rabbit through almost a weeks time. Refreshments would be nice. I'd almost say I'd be within a hair's breadth of starvation in another day or two. Besides, it could also have a dozen axemen attached to it, but either way I'll be dead."

He smiled politely and bowed his head. "Yes, My Lord. I am known as Hu Jing, the Barber. Refreshments would be much appreciated, My Lord. It was an arduous journey into town from my encampment in the hills."

"I've recently eaten my only horse." He didn't admit that last part out loud, but grinned through his bushy beard.

Fan raised an eyebrow at the word barber but an attendant whispered something in his ear and he smiled.

Refreshments were brought including some dried meats, honey cakes and wine.

"Master Hu, do you have any ambitions at all?"

Fan asked the question as he wiped imaginary crumbs from his robes.

Hi Jing’s eyes widened as the food and wine were brought out. It took all his resolve to not just launch himself into the tray of food. He politely, with shaking hands, took a small cake and stuffed it into his mouth, washing it down with a mouthful of wine.

”Ambitions? Not starving to death would be too right now.”
He gently wiped his mouth with a sigh and nodded to the generous man. “As a child, of course, I’d wanted to be a heroic warrior. But I was a butchers’ son, so my options were limited in that regard. I was always good with a knife, but butchering just seemed so...indelicate to me. And then we had that salt shortage a couple decades ago we went out of business.”

He paused and ran a hand through his beard. “I suppose you didn’t really ask me for my life story, did you? To answer your question: I’d love to grow fat and wealthy using my skills, that would probably be my greatest ambition.”

Fan shrugged.

"How you use your wealth is far beyond my interest. What I think is that you should gather a small army and take control of a village. I tell you, all these fools in charge there are just waiting..."

Again the attendant said something very lowly.

"Yes, well, should you venture forth and deem yourself worthy of commanding an army against these... rebels, I would like to help you with some soldiers in exchange for your loyalty and..."

He looked to the attendant as if forgetting his own thoughts.

"service. Yes?"

The yes was directed as much to his guest to the man beside him.

Hi Jing stared at the man, while quietly munching on a piece of food, as he made his outburst. As Zhao Fan made an offer of troops in exchange for loyalty, he widened his eyes. He brought the wine to his lips and drank it slowly, slurping awkwardly. “Well, I mean, I was originally from Leiyang. If I had the troops I suppose I’d be willing to go back there and govern over it.”

He ran his hand through his beard as he slowly considered his options. “I’ve never really expected such an offer. But yes, My Lord. I feel serving you would be very beneficial - for both of us.”

Fan nodded, smiling, bobbing his head like an idiot.

"Yes, yes of course, we shall both benefit from this... union."

He swatted away the person to his right that was about to whisper in his ear again.

"Return in march, do not forget, your men shall be ready. 100 of them to help you seize... that place you called out, yes yes..."

"March?" He muttered mostly to himself with a nod. "Yes, I should be able to come up with a plan by then. Very well, I shall return in March."

He bowed humbly to Zhao Fan before retuning to his original position and continue to eat from the refreshment tray in awkward silence. After a few moments he caught the wind in the air that it just may be his time to leave. Bowing once more, and less than stealthily shoving a few pieces of meat and cake into the folds of his shirt, he backed out of the room and left - returning to his makeshift bandit-less bandit camp.
