Liu Quan stood with his officers and his retinue of guards around him, observing the enemy lines and sighing. It was here. It was time. They had planned for months. He had analyzed the enemy forces. Plenty of reasons not to do this. It was foolish. The town reserve was huge. Zhao Fan... no, he was here now. He had made his decision. They gathered the information they had and marched. It would be now or never. He would take the city in one swoop, or he would fall trying. Still... he did not wish I'll upon its denizens or its leader. He knew that were it up to Zhao Fan they would be standing together, not opposed to each other.

"Meng... fire it now." Xu Meng, the consummate strategist and archer captain, nodded and launched a single arrow across the battlefield with a letter wrapped around it. It would land very near the enemy camp in sight of the guards. As Liu Quan stared for a moment, he pondered if the letter he was sending or if what he had decided for after the battle was right... but he had made his choice. He had his ideals. Justice, Honor and Valor... these were the pillars he built his campaign on. He would not falter here.

"Alright, men. Let's return to camp... we will see their reply on the battlefield. Hopefully they need my advice... the fewer losses, the better." He turned to face his officers and addressed them all one more time.

"Each of your has trusted me... each of you has believed in me and my cause... each of you has put your faith in me.... and trust me when I say I will pay that faith back with victory!" With that, Liu Quan and his men each raised a hand in a victory salute before returning to camp, readying for the battle about to take place.

Meanwhile, across the battlefield...

The soldiers, if they checked the letter, would find it was addressed directly to Zhao Fan. Assuming they delivered it to him, he would read the following letter.

Liu Quans Letter wrote:Lord Fan,

We both knew this day would come. I have stood by my convictions and remained true to them, and you have chosen to follow the whims of another instead of following your heart... but I do not hold that against you. I know the troops you can logistically bring to a fight while manning your outposts and not causing civil unrest, and we vastly outnumber that by 1000 men. We are armed. We are better trained, and our commanders are superior. I know you will not yield, I am not so foolish as to demand or even ask that: At this point we both have no choice but to fight... but you CAN limit how many lives must be lost. Chen Ying is no vanguard commander, despite his boasts. Let him stay back and field archers, and keep your vanguard small. The smaller it is, the more quickly it is routed. Once it is routed, you can end the fight having said you gave it your all... and every remaining life in your army and of your leaders shall be spared. I am no tyrant or despot. You should know me well enough to know I do not intend to out heads on spikes. I wish only to fulfill my ambitions: To bring a banner of peace across this land. And I still hold firm my dream: That after all is said and done, you can be working alongside me to see that dream come true.

I shall see your answer to my advice on the battlefield. I pray you consider it, because the less bloodshed, the better.

A few hours after the first letter had been fired, one in response would land near Liu Quan's lines with the following message.

From Guiyang wrote:Vile and despicable traitor,

Your head will roll from your shoulders soon enough. If not by our hand, then by the armies of the Imperial Chancellor... Die horribly, scum.

It was over. Months of planning and preparing. A whole army raised. Countless sleepless nights... and it was already over. The army fell in no time, with barely a man on his side so much as injured. It was as resounding a success as there could be... and yet, it was still unresolved.

Liu Quan waited, with his guards and his officers, at the same balcony overlooking Guiyang where he had seen Zhao Fan last. He had gotten a report that a small battalion had captured Chen Ying and Zhao Fan. Chen Ying, fearing retaliation, swore fealty. To be fair, Liu Quan understood why, but wished they had believed him. He would not kill any who didn't deserve it. That left Zhao Fan. Quan waited, impatiently, as Zhao Fan was brought before him. This would be the most important part of what he decided to do. And so, he waited.

(OOC: I'll let you decide how willingly Zhao Fan comes!)

"LET ME GO! LET ME GOOOOO!"

Shuffling was heard in the background as the figure of Zhao Fan was brought to his favorite veranda, no... no longer his veranda any more. Now it was HIS. With eyes like daggers, Fan looked upon Liu Quan as he was brought to his knees like a common prisoner, rope binding his arms against his body.

"Enjoying my view?"

Liu Quan shook his head, immediately speaking with anger.

"Not even slightly, not until this is dealt with." With that, he glared at the soldiers who brought him and immediately reprimanded them.

"If you two do not untie this man and help him back up, I will personally separate your heads from your bodies. I said to treat him in the manner he deserved... the manner of a Magistrate!" Quan sighed as he rubbed his forehead, with his fingers, shaking his head a bit. He had hoped they would not be sofoolish, but so it goes. The soldiers immediately ran, almost tripping over themselves to free the prisoner. As they untied him, they offered hands to assist him to his feet as their Lord had instructed. When he finally stood, or after a few moments anyways if he had refused, Quan spoke again.

"I told you from the beginning. I do not look at you as an enemy nor do I look at you as an antagonist... my dream was to walk in step, side by side. That dream is still a reality. This is not a threat for your submission, it is a request. I wish for you to join me. Help me oversee Guiyang, for I know that many foes will soon be upon me. I will not make some pretense to scare you: Your life is yours. I would not slay the man who inspired me to march in the first place. Whether you stand by me or not, even though I know that means you'll inevitably run to join the campaign against me... so be it. I have made my choice. I wish for your aid, not your head. If you would see the dream we had so long ago become real, then come stand alongside me. If you believe, however, that I am not fit to see that dream come true... well, you have my blessing to go, and I will be letting the entirety of this city no that you are no criminal, and there is no charge against you. You shall be treated as fairly as any other citizen, and of any soldier should think to treat you unfairly or try to manhandle you, I shall deal with them personally." With that, Quan walked over to the edge of the veranda, staring over the city and breathing out deeply, as though he was just trying to get some weight off him before he finished, still looking over the city.

"As you said... we could do great things... and as I said, we still can... so what say you now?"

Stretching slightly as his bonds were released, Fan eyed the man in front of him. It hadn't even been a full year since they had first seen each other. Liu Quan, some no one from somewhere and Zhao Fan, Grand Administrator of Guiyang. And now look at them, Liu Quan, de facto Grand Administrator if not officially and he, Zhao Fan, some no one from nowhere. Fan couldn't help but chuckle at the absurdity of it all.

"You know yourself there is no way out of this. By taking this city, you have given pretext for any number of individuals to now come and usurp your power, whether in my name or in their own. And should the Imperial Chancellor choose to send his troops in... we are all lost."

Rising to his feet, Fan took another look at the view from the veranda he had grown so used to overseeing during his time as Administrator, and now would never see again...

"If I am no criminal then your entire cause is unjust, Quan, in the eyes of the people. Honor, justice be damned. If you don't take my head, you are telling the world that this was a usurpation, not a righteous cause. First rule of politics: If you're right, someone else is wrong."

Quan sighed, still looking over the city as he responded.

"The Yellow Turbans were traitors to the Han. The Han were traitors to the Yellow Turbans. Dong Zhuo felt his aggressors opposed the Emperor. The Coalition felt Dong Zhuo was a monster. Liu Bei came to save Jing. Liu Bei was a monster and an interloper. All of these warlord running around... no matter who you are, where you are or what you do, someone will find a way to view you as the villain. You are absolutely right that my justice and my honor means nothing to anyone... but they mean something to me. Justice became the basis for this whole thing. To abandon it now is to admit that this whole campaign had no meaning, that it was all to become powerful and the wishes of the world be damned." He glanced over to Zhao Fan, continuing.

"I know this is facing insurmountable odds. They all wish to face me... but I won't back down. And more... I won't take your head. If I live to regret it, so be it... but I won't, because I've come this far on my convictions. You may refuse to join a hopeless cause as you see it, and I won't blame you... but I also won't stop you or slay you. I owe you this life of mine... and I will see that debt repaid until I myself should fall."

For a moment, brief as it was, Zhao Fan thought about throwing himself over the veranda. It would be a sure death. More importantly, surprisingly, it would offer Liu Quan the opportunity to realize the error of his way of thinking. But, deep down, perhaps even unknowingly, he yearned for what Quan was saying to be true... he yearned for the world that was being described to him...

Fan reached inside of his robe and pulled out a letter, bloodied from the battle but one could easily tell the handwriting, speaking of battle tactics and the desire to limit bloodshed. Looking at the contents once again, he then offered it up to Quan and with a half-smile, almost as if he was releasing himself from the bonds and self-restrictions he had imposed on himself.

"It was a sound strategy... Bao Long would have none of it."

Offering up a small chuckle, Fan sighed and fully stretched out his arms, as if embracing the new path before him, before returning his gaze on Liu Quan.

"Don't expect me to call you Lord, you know."
