Warlords: History & Biographies

The Kingdom of Qi

Location
The Kingdom of Qi occupied the mideastern region of China, equating to todays Shandong and Hebei provinces. Qi was a rich province, and had excellent natural borders in the Yellow and Huai Rivers to the west and south respectively.

Pre-Qin Empire
Qi originated on the peninsula, and slowly conquered the regions around it during the Warring states period, taking the Kingdom of Lu after it was eradicated in 249 BC by Chu and conquering the kingdom of Song in 286 BC. Ruled by King Tian Jian, Qi attempted to assist its neighbors against the Qin, but was finally conquered by the Qin General Wang Ben in 221 BC, the last of the seven states unified by the Qin Empire.

Post-Qin Empire
When the Qin Empire began to fail in 209 BC and Chen She began his rebellion, a descendent of King Tian Jian, Tian Dan, killed the Qin Magistrate of Qi and reunified the country under his control. Over the next 7 years, the kingdom would spend much of its time being conquered or fighting civil wars, ending up with eight different kings, six of them different members of the powerful Tian family. In a short two-year span starting in 207, Tian Dan, Tian Jia, Tian Shi, Tian Du, and Tian Rong all claimed the title of King over Qi until the powerful General Tian Heng put Tian Guang and kept him there for three years. Despite an agreement to surrender to Liu Bang in 204 BC, Liu Bang’s general Han Xin invaded Qi, removed the Tian’s from power, and was made King of Qi by Liu Bang. After Liu Bang became Emperor, Han Xin’s power grew even greater, as he became King of both Qi and most of eastern Chu. But Liu Bang became suspicious of Han Xin, and had him arrested and removed as King after accusing him of treason. In Han Xin’s stead Liu Bang appointed his son, Liu Fei as King of Qi, and Qi remained an integral part of the Han Empire.
