Warlords: History & Biographies

The Kingdom of Han

Location
Not to be mistaken for the ancient state of Han that existed just south of the yellow River near Luoyang, this Kingdom existed at the western frontier of the Qin Empire, roughly equating to the south of the modern state of Shaanxi. At the time of the Qin, Han was a mountainous and sparsely populated region, that largely served as a buffer against barbarians.

Pre-Qin Empire
Han played almost no role in the rise of the Qin Empire, being a minor possession of the Kingdom of Qin for almost 250 years before the Empire’s founding.

Post-Qin Empire
In 207BC, when the Qin Empire was destroyed by Chu, the two chief generals of Chu became involved in a power struggle, and Liu Bang, the loser, was made King of Han and sent into what amounted to exile.

Liu Bang returned east from Han however, after only spending eight months in his kingdom, and never returned. Over the next five years, he conquered the rest of the Empire, and the unimportant kingdom over which he first became king gave its name to the new Han Empire he created, a dynasty which lasted for more than 400 years.
